I'm a huge fan of the SMFAS shrinkage from 100 to 60 (and soon to be 50?) but I'm kind of with Roba on this one, feels like there's more potential and variety for 100 characters here.

One possibility is keeping it 100 but changing the rules to have bottom 2 rather than bottom 1 eliminated in some rounds, particularly the earlier rounds? 2 elims per day and you've halved the field by the time we're out of boots.

Or if the sanctity of FoG is maintained and 2 elims/day for the other 15 boot days, that's still 15 days saved.... could extend the 2 elims beyond Day 25 too, whittle the field down quicker.

Yeah, I think some contests shrank their fields out of necessity because the participation didn't warrant a larger field. SMFFFC is still going strong.

Could just do a few random FoG rounds on Day 21-50

Out of curiosity, I tried to put together what a limited field would look like. This is 50 cut to the bone, no fun allowed. The ones in brackets would be the first to go to make room for anyone else.

I know I'm strawmanning with 50 because lefty didn't give a number, but that filled up fast and I feel like I left plenty out. No room for moogles. No Ktjn or Krjn. No side games other than FFT. No pets...

I mean it's either the roster is all mainstays or the roster includes too many joke characters and mainstays get left out

for instance Garik Ronso instead of Jecht

yeah 50 is too extreme, its probably just 90 or so and he gets to cut out 2/2 which he said in the past he hates

For the record, I'd be fine with two elims during early boot rounds. That seems like the best compromise if lefty needs less days, because I really don't want to decrease the field size.

Yeah it feels like best of both worlds, you keep the field the same (or shrink it a bit) but move through it more quickly. Which also speaks to my heart as someone who yearns for the peace of this being over (ideally successfully).

On that note: with the latest days off we are now at Tuesday Sept 19 for Day 98, so gives three more potential off-days between now and a theoretical Friday final day, which pretty well tracks with last year's at this point (four true off-days + a fifth which was solely the buffer to make Day 98 Friday)

Yeah, two eliminations per day during the boot rounds removes the same amount of days as reducing the field by 10-15.

The real taboo topic I think is increasing the number of boots. 20 of each feels spicy to me.

default is amano design, the first Faris alt was based off her sprite (like how default Terra is that weird ugly blond and she typically gets a sprite alt for green hair terra)

The chasm between Amano and Sprite designs for Faris is (for lack of me knowing about more differences) #2 of all time. Surely no one can ever compete w/ the Celes #1, unless DFFOO created a literal like, humanoid lettuce clown head.

Yeah, Amano Celes is much better. I don't have a very strong preference for Faris, both are pretty cool. I guess I'd give that one to Amano too.

If less days are needed I also throw my vote into same size double elims.

Tactically making my first save 1 second before the # of hours before the end of the round limit would occur so there's technically no holding

100 is a nice round number and has worked very well, I'm not sure what the benefit would be to shrinking it. 100 allows people to get in stuff that might otherwise get left out whilst allowing plenty of room for the most popular characters. With well over 20 major games to choose from making the field smaller just sounds like anti-fun to me.

Throw me into the "just double eliminations for awhile" camp.

I will say that yeah... some of the last couple of years here, the nominations have been a little peculiar and perhaps "not for everyone". But if the contest is popular and people are having a good time, I'm not sure what the cause would be to make sure there's less of that? Final Fantasy is also an ongoing series with new releases, scaling the contest back would be pretty strange in that regard. Just seems super silly; no one is obligated to play this game (if there was some argument for it lasts too long), or host it, for that matter.

It's easy to say "nobody is obligated to host it" except I doubt there's a long line of people waiting to step up to take lefty's place if he decides he doesn't have the time to do it the way he wants to do it.

I would do it if the alternative was nothing, but I don't think it needs to come to that.

I'm sure the line isn't 0 though. Even if it was, this contest isn't obligated to exist either. I'd sort of rather it not exist than get gutted.

I'm sure somebody would do it, but it's a bigger commitment than you're making it sound like if you want a host who's actually going to do a good job.

I'm pretty certain I've accomplished life tasks higher than hosting a forum game on a relatively small community of people, but sure, whatever you say.

I'm not attempting to lessen the commitment of hosting this either, I'm not really sure where you're getting that from. There are a lot of people who have played this game since its inception here and I'm sure a number of them would do a fine job handling it; I think you're either placing too much faith on this contest or not enough on other board members.

I will say that by this point, it does seem like the vast majority of possible controversies and loopholes have been stamped out by established rules and precedencies, so I'd hope that hosting has gotten less stressful over the years.

I say RAISE the character count to 120-150, but then start with triple elims, transitioning to double, then single. Do the necessary math so that the contest is 10-20 days shorter overall.

I want a 1000 character 24/7 bot contest

barring that, I will take a "SMFFFC VII-2" just to help get Celes the win

Again, I said that because you made it seem like it would be too hard for anyone to run, and I just don't agree. To run as well as lefty? Then sure, but to be frank, I think lefty has been the best host. That can sort of be seen as the contest has, for the most part, lost a lot of the chaotic natures that it once had. Round start times are normalized, lawyering is all but dead and the playing field feels more leveled rather than skewed towards the ultra popular sorts. All that being said, I don't think every host has to be lefty. If he did want to hand it over to someone else, I wouldn't expect whoever it was to live up to this standard because that'd be unrealistic. But it also isn't necessary to live up to that standard so long as whoever it was was trying their best and the contest was still around.

My main point was that if time is a problem, I'd rather lefty hand the contest off to someone else or perhaps decide to retire it completely, or for some time. Lessening the roster is just going to create stress and annoyance for the people who want to play the game, and I just don't see what it accomplishes other than "makes the contest shorter". From any standpoint that doesn't come from "I just don't want the contest to run that long" the concept of lowering the roster makes no sense. Final Fantasy is just such a huge series to be constrained to less than 100 entrants; even with 100 we have omitted tons of playable characters and major NPCs while as I mentioned, Final Fantasy continues to release games.

To be frank here, I put a lot of those measures in place, and lefty has been able to run the contest more smoothly because of it.

I'm not saying I was a better host than lefty (I wasn't), but most of those rules were already in place when he took over. He wasn't the one who had to deal with them.
