I think they were trying to subvert expectations and give an atypical ending where the good guy doesn't predictability outsmart the bad guy against all odds and ride off into the sunset It's realistic, as a ruthless highly trained hitman like Chigurh would likely come out on top against some regular dude who is in way over his head. I know it's eventually Mexican gangsters that get him but the same logic should apply Killing the guy off camera was meant to show I guess that's it not always a big cinematic standoff, sometimes you just get fucked up and it's not glamorous --- Started from the bottom now we here ...
