Like not discouraging him or make him stop when he's trying to hunt? He gets one every few months or so and theyre just basic birds. BTW I dont really own the cat. Just a stray I feed and who has now decided they live in my house.

No. Yes, cats kill birds, but that is not the only things they hunt. By and large, and my family has owned many, many cats, I have seen cats kill and eat rabbits more than anything, followed by squirrels. Rabbits can decimate gardens and squirrels are just all around nuisances that also impact bird populations due to the competition for food in domestic environments.

Its just that he seems happier having best of both worlds? Like getting to live a full cat life while still having somewhere to fall back down to with food security and pets. So at the same time not much I can do, really. I just noticed cause my 5 year old kid came giggling towards me (wfh) saying how the cat is eating a bird. But yeah, he wasnt really eating and took the bird with him away.

At least the bird was dead this time. Last one kept chirping while the cat kept playing with it. Seemed cruel, but I understand its their nature.

Outdoor cats are essentially an invasive species

if they werent pets thered be DNR campaigns to eliminate them

https://www.nbcnews.com/think/amp/rcna41768

In the U.S., cats kill an estimated 2.4 billion birds every year, more than double the number of birds killed by cars, windows, wind turbines, power lines and communication towers combined. And this is all on top of the estimated 478 million reptiles, 173 million amphibians and 12.3 billion mammals that cats in the U.S. kill every year. Some of those mammals are undoubtedly mice. Many are not. An Australian study found that feral, or free-ranging unowned cats, prey on 400 different species there, including 28 threatened and endangered species.

A single cat and her offspring, brought to New Zealands remote Stephens Island in 1894, wiped the Stephens Island wren off the face of the earth. Thats just one of the more than 60 vertebrate extinctions around the world that domestic cats have played a hand in, making up a quarter of all modern reptile, bird and mammal extinctions.

So yes, cats are an invasive alien species. To claim that cats are not invasive is a sign of myopic love for cats and ignorance of the many species they harm. For the record, I like cats. There are two cats lazing around the house as I write this. But I also like ecological diversity and the joy of seeing frogs peek out of the water and hearing birdsongs in my backyard.

weird post. should everyone just... let their dogs out too, and hope for the best? domestic animals don't belong in the big world outside, because they aren't wild animals. tigers and lions belong outside, house cats belong in... you know... houses? where they can't fuck up ecosystems and spread feline aids to each other

Native Americans had dogs before Europeans arrived. I think the chihuahua is descended from a New World dog, but that might be wrong.

Goddamn some people are stupid. Keep your cats inside. "Letting your cat outside let's it live a fulfilling life in the wild" my ass. Your cat is a PET, not a wild animal.

If you want to go by that rule, let's let all the dogs run around outside, form packs, and slaughter everything in their path to give them a fulfilling life. Better yet, let's let ALL of the pythons, iguanas, monitors, frogs, fish, pigs, cows, horses, ferrets, hamsters, rats, birds/parrots, and anything else that could be considered a pet outside so they can have fulfilling lives in the wild.

Outdoor cats are like the global representation of mass human ignorance

Whereas cat is synonymous with all members of felidae, dog is mostly used to the domesticated species. Prehistoric felidae still out-hunted the dogs canidae ancestor-cousins though. Our currents pets are a long way from both.

Also, if anyone tries to say this, hyenas are not cats. Being feliformia is not felidae. Hyenas are more closely related to cats than dogs, but they are not cats. By the same logic, one would call seals dogs.
