The Rays released a statement Sunday night noting that Major League Baseball is looking into social media posts about star shortstop Wander Franco that surfaced earlier in the day.

During todays game, we were made aware of the social media posts that are circulating regarding Wander Franco, the clubs statement said. We take the situation seriously and are in close contact with Major League Baseball as it conducts its due diligence.

On Sunday, social media posts went viral alleging that Franco, 22, had been in an inappropriate relationship with a minor.

Franco did not play in the Rays 9-2 loss to the Guardians on Sunday afternoon at Tropicana Field. Manager Kevin Cash said it was just a day off for the All-Star shortstop, who had started each of the Rays previous 20 games and 39 of the last 40.

I'm aware of the speculation. I'm not going to comment any further on that, Cash said. But the day off was because [it was] a day off."
The Rays begin a three-game series against the Giants on Monday in San Francisco.

I really hope this is true cause Ive been a huge fan of Wander since his days in the minors and would hate to see this is how it ends for him if its legit.

I was a Rays fan when I was into baseball (Im not into baseball anymore) so has Wander reached all that massive potential yet?

I would feel bad for Rays fans if this ends up being true. The Rays have been a great team for the last decade, but they've unfortunately been stuck with an extremely cheap owner. Wander Franco is the one guy they actually gave a pretty large contract too.

Yeah he's probably the all-around best shortstop in baseball at the moment.

Lets say media is wrong and she is really over 18. Like that other poster said. Can this player sue for defamation or he is fucked no matter what since this story will always be out there since the retraction isn't rarely as big as the original story.

Pretty much, when the season began he was on absolute fire and looks like he was gonna deliver on all the hype that was put on him. And like Kenobi said, the team gave him the largest contract ever in the organization with 11 years and it looks like he was gonna be the face of the team for the next decade.

What is there to fucking read? If it was so simple to look at the girl's Instagram to determine if she was over the age of 18 then there wouldn't be the need to do this investigation and waste everyone's time. Everyone would have laughed at the girl, ignored her posts and moved on. But seeing how both the entire organization and investigators are looking into this, it's not as simple as just looking into the girl's insta.
