or any of you believe it should have never been started in the first place? iirc it was started right after the great depression, when during that time it was incredibly bad for most older people who could no longer work...etc...

It's a basic requirement for a civilised society.

Along with universal healthcare, mandatory paid maternity leave, and the abolition of the death penalty.

I think it should exist. I'm sure there are better more efficient ways to operate the program, but it should exist.

A good society takes care of it's elderly and disabled, that's mostly Asian countries and nordic countries, Americans want to get rid of Social Security because they don't give a fuck about the elderly

People who want that think it's going to reduce how much they get taxed, it wont. All that will really happen is a spike in homelessness, suicides and crime rate.

I think it should exist for those who are unable to work (including those who are physically able to work but unable to actually find a job), or those who are working but need extra assistance to make ends meet.

I don't think it should be provided to people who simply want to retire but make someone else pay for it. Those people should have saved / invested for their retirement.

To be clear I'm talking about systems where it's "once you get to a certian age, you get a taxpayer funded pension". Private pensions funded by those who choose to invest in them (using a loose definition here, so eg. I am including those that are funded by employers) are a different matter. I believe the US system works more based on this kind of setup, not overly familiar with it?

EDIT: I see UBI was also mentioned. I see that as a bit different as that's an entitlement everyone would equally be given, rather than it being old people funnelling yet more of the younger generation's money into their own pockets.

No, I don't think we should coddle toxic billionaires and allow them to steal even more money from Americans (that the American people all pay into, by the way) just because they think their pockets aren't bloated enough as is, and that the average American is "spoiled" by having access to a pittance when they're older or disabled.

It's always been a shit system. Just the currently old leeching off of the younger people of working age until it finally collapses and a generation or two are gonna get fucked out of the program they've spent most of their life "paying into".

Cause they weren't really paying into anything other than the payout of the current drawers. Go do the math of the "return" you get on your money through security and the return you would get if that money were rolled into a retirement account instead if you want to get pretty mad.

No, but I don't feel confident I should count on it for my own old age, in its current state. I hate to say it, but the highlights of the more intricate working of SS & the explanation what it was founded on, basically make it a pyramid scheme, in function. The most popular footnotes for how SS was formed, tend to cite that it was assumed that the Baby Boom trend would continue, & there would always be more working people paying, than recipients. Also, the calculated payments that would need to be made, were based on a time when life expectancy was notably shorter than it is now. Then you have the issue of, like most things, it generally isn't keeping adequate pace with inflation.

The system needs a massive overhaul, but Republicans are unlikely to allow anything besides ending the system on the notion of less taxes, & trying to push private solutions.

Yes, As things stand unless it's revamped completely SS is going to end weather anyone likes it or not. Which sucks since it'll likely be my generation it does. Along with most of the other crap boomers have taken a loan out on our future for that's due soon.

Personally I think it should never have been implemented the way it was. And a system like Singaporea would have been far more effective.

You're forgetting the rise in taxes that will actually accompany it, because there will be less people with money so the corporations will get less profit meaning the government will have to hand out more bailouts to those companies.

Yeah, most people don't seriously grasp, much less consider, the distinction of micro & macro economics.
