Change should come around 2045, study of updated US census data predicts, but author says ageing is not race-neutral

Gen Z Americans who were born between 1997 and 2012 will be the last generation with a white majority and will give way to a post-2012 majority minority generation Alpha, according to a new study of updated US census data.

That change when non-Hispanic white people will fall below half as a share of the overall US population should come around 2045, the study predicts.

I'm fine with it. Whenever the MAGA trash start pulling out "muh white genocidez" narratives, I tell 'em that if they're in danger of going extinct for being white, I'm in much greater peril by being a ginger, yet I still see "my people" all the time, the world keeps spinning, and I don't have panic attacks (like the MAGAs do) whenever I see a white person and a black person holding hands.

Also, by their logic, light skinned people should have vanished from Mexico long ago when the Spanish were no longer running things, but there are still lots of light skinned people in Mexico.

We've built a culture where a privileged class literally cannot feel good unless they have someone to look down on as inferior. They don't want minorities to be ok because it causes them to have an inferiority complex.

I wouldn't be surprised if the 2008 financial crash accelerated the timeline a bit. I think I remember predictions in the early 2000s saying that it would be around 2060 or so when whites would join the minority. I believe those models didn't take into account the fact that millennials wouldn't be having children as frequently as their predecessors though and that probably moved it up a generation.

Part of it is also that people who are multi-racial are more likely to identify as such even if they could pass for white.

Yes and Cubans plus various other South Americans of their descendants. But I've met several darker complected Cubans and Puerto Ricans that consider themselves white. It seems to be basically anyone that isn't explicitly afro-latino is adopting the term.

Aside from concerns like social security issues, people having fewer kids and doing so later in life (but before birth complications become a big concern) is a positive development for society. People with higher socioeconomic status tend to be the first to adopt that trend, so it makes sense that would be mostly white people in this country. If socioeconomic status tended to equalize over time, in theory we would see races reproduce at about the same rate. However, I can't say I feel to optimistic about socioeconomic status raising in an equitable rate, given how wealth disparity seems to keep growing. So unless people at the bottom of the distribution are still living very comfortably (due to technological improvement and assuming aren't all wrecked by climate change, which in my opinion is the biggest wrench in this whole theory/projection), I'm not sure how likely a scenario it is that we actually see living standards raise for everyone across the board.

Its pretty logical. America is a place where we have a substantial amount of minorities, therefore you're gonna get a bunch of mixed race people. America is not a white "base" like Finland or something.

Growing pains now, but we'll be better for it down the line.
