In the 70s you could buy a refrigerator that would run 20 years without service and a lawn mower than could go 10 without repairs... nowadays you are lucky if either makes it just 2-4 years. If companies REALLY cared about the environment like they constantly claim they do on social media... they would make stuff that cost a bit more and last 4x longer. The fashion industry is one of the most hypocritical, self-righteous and egregious offenders.

Stuff like that video essay is interesting to me because I do so little shopping for anything but perishable groceries. It's crazy how people own a full shoe rack of shoes for themselves, need more space in their closet, etc

Yep I firmly believe corporations do this on purpose or else they wouldn't make money year after year, they need returning customers

My parents somehow. Their older fridges are still running perfectly fine.

This is true. My in laws have a vacuum from their childhood (theyre in their 50s now) back in Ukraine that still runs perfectly up to this day.

They also had an iron from their childhood that still works 40 years later without a single issue.

Meanwhile, we already ran through 2 vacuums in a span of 5 years.

Its definitely true that products are made worse on purpose so that you can buy more of it.

It's mostly steel versus plastic. Check out this fridge from the 60s
https://br.pinterest.com/pin/77757531055782854/

Modern fridges are more energy efficient, lighter weight, and FAR cheaper. That $300 fridge from the 60s would be over $3000 now, compared to a typical $600-1000 fridge that lasts 10-20 years.
