Because half of them didn't have lyrics. And most of the ones that did you could barely understand.

They did. In the earlier days of people getting themes, it was popular radio music.
JYD had Another One Bites the Dust. When that theme hit, the crowd exploded. Especially in New Orleans. Before that, themes were pretty rare. It was cool that the AEW Dynamite crowd was singing Pantera's "Walk" when Rob Van Dam debuted there recently. He hasn't used that song since the old actual ECW.
