While not necessarily a matter of illiteracy, the perception of the first Dirty Harry movie. Its commonly criticised for being pro-fascism, as it portrays civil rights as being frustratingly restrictive (since we have a movie viewers perspective on what the killer is doing while the system doesnt) and contrives a reason to keep the killer on the loose.

Meanwhile the creator of the character Dirty Harry intended him to be somewhat of a deconstruction of the cowboy cop character. Harry is meant to be, in the creators words, almost as bad as the killers he chases. Not a celebration of cowboy cops not a commentary on how police need more power.

The second movie scaled back on that front where the bad guys were an actual death squad that Harry opposed as going way too far, but it still had this rather uncomfortable piece of dialogue early on-

These days if a cop kills a hoodlum on the streets he might as well just dump the body some place! Because those young bastards at the DAs office will crucify him one way or another. They let a hood kill a cop, but let a cop kill a hood?

Meanwhile decades later, does that sound right? That people get away with killing cops all the time while a cop gets crucified for the tiniest little thing?

Though that might just be that characters intentionally misguided view, as later on one of the corrupt cops outright says its almost impossible to prosecute a cop.

Maybe a little illiteracy on my part there?

You know the media would blast that as encouraging chaos and violence against police! 24/7. And enough people will take that at face value and raise hell.

I remember when the Australian version of L4D2 had to remove the riot cops from the fifth campaign because apparently the fact theyre zombies is trumped by the fact theyre police, and Violence Against Police is a big no no.

No, The Comedian and Rorschach aren't badass, they're crazy broken people.

Rorschach at least has the excuse that he's pretty much just portrayed as a regular superhero for like, the entire first half of the story, and even after you learn how unhinged he is he's still mostly working against someone even more unhinged and comes off looking better by comparison. You actually have to think and digest his character a bit to appreciate how fucked he is.

Comedian though iirc is presented as an unrepentant murdering rapist asshole for 99% of the book and have no idea how anyone could think he's cool >_>

Ehh, that's goofy elseworld shit. It's people banging action figures together to make them kiss, which is harmless enough.

But there is like a shipping critical mass point in fandom where it becomes holy fucking war and derails the entire fanbase. Sherlock, for one - that got so bad that fans were convinced that there was a secret final episode that would explain why the last season sucked and pair up Sherlock and Watson. Supernatural had it pretty bad too with the end of the show not canonising destiel, even if the meltdown was top tier internet entertainment.

I like Doctor Who on its own merits. I also got involved in shipping for the first time in ages for that show during the most recent run. There's a healthy balance between fandom and canon, but there has to be a separation. When people don't drive that wedge and make the shipping a core aspect of their personality, that's where I begin to agree with what you're saying. Those guys are nutjobs.

Technically it was an immaculate conception type deal but Arian still impregnated Power Girl against her wishes. Still super rapey.

It wasn't even people's perception of Tyler Durden, but the media (and a lot of the audience) simply misunderstanding the entire point of the movie. The media in particular hyper-focused on "toxic masculinity" etc. because the trailers showed a lot of the fighting scenes.

Both. The Book opens with comedic levels of violence against a society with a tangential relationship to the war and most of the book is about higher ups telling the characters how much the corp sucks and how they shouldn't be there. But it's played a lot more straight so people didn't get it

Berserk is one I see a lot of people consistently misunderstand. There's always comments about how Guts has lost his edge compared to the black swordsman arc, but that's missing the entire point of Guts as a character. It's even stated explicitly by Godot that Guts behavior in the black swordsman arc and his quest for revenge cost him way more than he gained. People just think it's cool when big sword man swings his big sword

Oh, for sure. That whole arc is infamously one stupid decision after another.

What makes Vegeta stand out is that not only was he an arrogant piece of shit who didn't give a damn about his family, and somehow people think that's cool (toxic masculinity), but he also threw a tantrum after losing a fight. He wasn't just an asshole, but an incredibly childish one.

Buu arc and GT Vegeta are the character at his best, because he's actually grown into a functional adult.

It's applicable though. You could even say that media illiteracy applies to the writers of Super themselves, Toriyama included, as they clearly have zero understanding of Goku's character. Media illiteracy and misunderstanding can just as easily apply to the rights holders and even original creator as it can to the consumer.

Yeah, Watchmen is a prime example, for all the reasons listed and countless others. And the guy who was most illiterate of its message got to make a movie out of it!

On a different subject, I've seen an opinion thrown around a few times that Aang struggled hard for everything in his life while Korra is a Mary Sue who gets everything handed to her. Like, I get it, you hate LoK, that's fine, but this opinion in particular is the nadir of media illiteracy: Aang being a naturally-gifted bending prodigy (much to the chagrin of the hard-working Katara) is a plot point in numerous episodes, and his greatest obstacle (learning earthbending) is overcome in a single episode; on the other hand, it famously takes Korra an entire season to learn airbending.
