Been years so I'm not sure of the full details, but pretty sure I got it.

Essentially, there was a kid who got into gang culture and robbed a convenience store, nobody got hurt and he was caught shortly after.

Kid was cooperative and added up working a lot towards rehabilitation, got early release with light parole terms.

A bit into his parole, he asked for permission to leave the city to go camping with friends. He deliberately omitted that he was going hunted, because he knew he'd be denied permission because he wasn't allowed access to guns during parole.

He did nothing wrong on the hunting trip, which he thought would be just that. But one of the people he went with noted that some other people were camping near them.

This person went over to their camp and shot the camping couple nearly 100 times.

They were quickly caught(I can't remember if the parolee reported it or not) and the case was a minor scandal in the area. It was revealed the parolee had lied about the camping, so he was sentenced for a parole violation and thrown in jail for about a decade.
