PPV bonus averages 6k for mid carders. Most he made from a PPV was 30k. Most he made for one year is 430k. Made about 800k his whole career with the WWE.

So not worth it for him.

800k in 5 years as a mid carder isn't too bad.
Most people here never see close to that.

That doesn't sound remotely worth the endless shit you had to go through to be accepted in a WWE locker room in the early 2000's. And the brutal road schedule back then. Also gotta take into account that travel costs are on the talent, not paid for by WWE.

He was in the WWE for 5 years as a mid carder from 2001-2005. He averaged about 200k per year I guess, hard to say what that was really worth during that time.

Yes he mentions taxes and finances you have to account for. He said Uncle Sam took about 42% of what you make that year and then you gotta worry about housing, traveling, food, rainy day bullshit expanses fueled into it as well. I'd say he prolly kept only 100k out of that max 420k that he made.

According to wikipedia, he was a middle school teacher at Tigard, Oregon before the WWE. According to Google, teachers in Oregon make $15-21/hr (oof).
Is that worth it?

Weird reality show aside, Nowinski's background is more prototypical of guys breaking in. He was a college football player with no meaningful shot at the pros, so he went to Killer Kowalski's school which was up the road from Boston where he studied at Harvard (in case you never heard, lol).

Serious athletic background + training from one of Vince Sr's guys + the Harvard thing = WAAAAY more to work with than what Maven brought to the table long-term.

Nowinski was always going to get a WWE contract. Maven was the plucky underdog that "normal" guys could relate to.

Did he ever have any major injuries? Medical costs might have eaten a huge chunk of that.

WWE would have covered those costs when he was under contract, so he would have only had to pay anything beyond that point, such as lasting nagging injuries, which I don't believe he had.

He said he was fortunate not to get injured during his run there. $800k in 4 years is pretty good though for someone in his position on the card. Its not like he was putting on super gymnastic 20 min matches every night like they do today.

For his position, they would have. They were very much attempting to make him a big thing, at the time. That's why they had him do things such as eliminate the Undertaker in a battle royal.

The problem is fans didn't take to it, but that didn't change how management saw him, nor why he made so much in his position.

Keep in mind how much they have to spend on rental cars, hotels, and meals. That's easily over $50,000 in a year.

He was only active in WWE for barely two years, though, so in that time, even discounting that, he still make 700~k. And that's assuming he didn't already account for that in the amount he listed.

At the very least, he made approximately $350k per year.

EDIT: Sorry, I guess he was fully active by 2002. But, still that's basically... 700-800k over 3 years.

He made, according to him, $800k for roughly 3-ish years of work. Even if you take out health insurance and travel and so on, which isn't out of the ordinary, considering he never had any major injuries or anything, he made far more than your average person.

Jim Cornettes podcasts are my link to wrestling these days, and every now and then he will explore what people were making in the territory days, what the expenses were, etc., and run everything through inflation calculators. Wrestlers were making bank back then, its pretty interesting to me since I started watching in the Attitude Era.

Which is a lot of money for the spot on the card he had. Its not like he was used the entire 3 years either. He said he saved it too which was pretty smart of him. The part that sucks is he said he was making like $5k quarterly for royaltys from dvd sales and now because of the network it is more like $300 lol.

This. Pretending they never attempted to push Maven is silly. The problem was that they pushed him too hard, too fast, and the fans rejected it... Not that they didn't push him at all. Hell, within like, 2-3 months of his debut, he had a world title match. He ended up with the Hardcore title stuff because he wasn't getting over.

I have noticed the term midcarder being applied to people who were seemingly low card a lot of the time. Midcarde should mean tag champs or IC title hunt
