Drove around the whole day without realizing it.

Had to go to the police station to report it stolen and go get news ones after 4pm. Luckily, its surprising easy to get new plates as an AAA member. Took less than 10min total to do it. Now to pick up some anti-theft screws for the new plates.....

Was it a cool plate with a unique name or something?

I would be pissed if someone stole my personalized plate

Thats weird. Why would someone steal a license plate?

Maybe if youre a collector and the car was in a junkyard or abandoned, but not from a car someone uses every day.
For crime. They screw the stolen plates on their getaway vehicle to throw off the cops. Coworker of mine had that happen to him, his license plates got stolen and used in a jewelry store robbery.

Very common. You put them on your car or a stolen car, so at a glance, it doesn't look like anything is out of place. Of course, if the tag is run and it doesn't match the type of vehicle you are driving, you'll still be pulled over. But the people who steal tags aren't the brightest.

It's really just a quick disguise, pretty much. Only works until someone really looks into it.

Yea just be stuck to your little bubble with shitty public transit and not have the freedom to go wherever you want, whenever you want.

I went to their office location and got brand new plates and registation in under 10minutes. This was at 5:40pm, when the DMV is closed.

Hopefully stealing plates becomes less prevalent as technology advances. There's already newer police cars that can automatically scan plates and check if the registration is still current. Just needs to reach a point where it also checks the model of the car too and make sure they match.

Basically AAA allows their members to do some DMV functions at their locations. In California, we have to pay for our registration and tags every year. And you could do that through AAA in a few minutes instead of waiting in DMV's long ass lines.

JFC, I got a parking ticket for missing the front license plate in the morning. I only had one set of mounting hardware since one was stolen with my plate, and I mounted the back one since it had the registration sticker. What a joke.

I even ordered a new set of hardware for rush delivery for today too.

Years ago someone stole mine.

I didn't know it until someone from the Sheriff's Office came to my house and told me.

Apparently someone stole it and was involved in a police chase and crash in another state (VA).

Told me to write my tag number down and stick it to may back window and my tags would be mailed back to me later.

Took about two weeks to get them back.

The DMV or whomever ships the plates out need to start including them when new plates are given.

Big pain in the butt but take a picture of both plates on, say one was stolen the night before, and youll be good to go.

I got a ticket on the way to get my car inspected, didnt pay anything and showed up to court, showed the new inspection and was good to go.

That's a fucking terrible idea. If a cop runs the plate it'll show up for a completely different car

Yeah, but they know they won't get in trouble unless they get caught doing it constantly.
"Wait, my normal plate isn't on there? Someone must have switched it!"

Pretty much no way to prove they took it or were aware it was on their vehicle. Could have been switched out by someone else.
