Mafia down, cartels up. MS-13 spread pretty fast in the earlier 2000s in the US.

They took over parts of the NE especially, Camden, NJ became the highest murder city in the nation and the police entirely lost control, law enforcement wouldn't even respond anymore.

Richard Nixon, but yeah, it basically gave the government the ability to prosecute the bosses/'dons' for criminal activity even though they weren't personally getting their hands dirty.

Kennedy i think (maybe wrong), i know RFK was a big supporter of the Rico act.

Really by the early 80s much of the US mafia's power was broken...

There were still variations but by the 90s they were pretty much wiped out...

Lot of good books on the subject....Casino, Goodfellas, Black Mass.etc...

Now they are on youtube. Still can't over Sammy the bull Gravano having a youtube channel. Guy admitted to being involved in 19 murders. Then theres that other guy Michael Franzese (who seems to now be a right wing christian). Its all insane to me.

Pretty much. Besides RICO being a major blow, there's a much smaller recruitment pool of future talent. They've lost most of their major union and political power they used to have. If you look at mafia family charts most of the guys on there are middle aged and older. New York is still doing ok and so is Philadelphia to a lesser extent. but other families have relatively few members.

Still, they're down a bit, but nowhere near being out.

Yea that Franzese fella was scamming like 20mil a week in some gas tax fraud in the early 80s.

Franzese also said it's almost impossible for wiseguys to exist like the old days with all the cameras and types of surveillance around now.

Can't just walk up and shoot someone in the back of the head and walk away like in the old days.

I still think it's wild that the last time an American mob boss was killed, which was only a few years ago, he was by some nut and not some rival criminal.

Yea that was Frank Cali who was boss of the Gambino's at the time.

John Gotti Jr even had come out and say that it wasn't his Uncles who orchestrated the hit.

Apparently it involved some issue with a girl.
