Interesting... I hope one of the big YouTube science channels like PBS Spacetime, SciShow, or Kurzgesagt picks up on this and makes a video about it.

I'm waiting for UCS and Argonne to confirm. Some of the experiments so far have been low quality or inconclusive.

I'm also very excited about that new cancer drug that targets and kills almost every tumor imaginable.

We're on the verge of the singularity perhaps.

Or more immediately, any tech we have in operation right now that relies on superconductors. Like our particle accelerators, which rely on expensive to maintain superconducting magnets. In theory this would make higher energy particle accelerators more feasible

Based on all the latest developments, the diamagnetism/floating seems proven.

Whether there's truly zero resistance and a sane method of creating the samples, that's still up in the air.

They've replicated the process of making the material. They haven't observed superconductivity at ~400K.

If you want a shorthand you can look at the betting market: https://polymarket.com/event/is-the-room-temp-superconductor-real

As long as this remains <50% then you know there hasn't been a confirmation of superconductivity at important temperatures.

The floating is at room temperature though. A flood of new videos came in overnight from various experimenters. And that's a big first step.

Ignore the betting markets that bet against progress.

Yes, but absent of theory, that's far more likely to be diamagnetism without superconductivity.

I'm not trying to rain on the parade, I posted the first topic about LK99, I just want people to be aware that most headlines and claims you see about this on news sites and Twitter are exaggerated or outright wrong. Because the writers know as little about materials science as we do.

Ignore the betting markets that bet against progress.
Absolutely do not do this, I'm introducing it as a reference because <50% yes shows the educated money sees reasonable doubt in the discovery remaining. It's not an arbiter of truth, it's a shorthand to know if a new claim you see is exaggerated or if it has actually affected what people expect about LK99.

There was a group that has shown support for room temp superconductivity in simulation, iirc.

Because physics dictates that systems tend to remain stable at their lowest-possible energy states, this means that the amount of superconducting material produced with each "shake-and-bake" manufacturing attempt will result in relatively low quantities of the material. The hope, then, is that further refinements to the fabrication process will yield higher quantities of the material that can then be harvested and put toward building the superconductors themselves.

Sad to hear but still exciting.

Nobody should be expecting industrial scale purity at this point. We have a bunch of researchers doing NileRed YOLO stuff just to be first.

And that's just as valid as long as your methods are reproducible.

never ignore betting markets on anything. vegas (or international bookmakers) always beat the sharp money and the odds makers will know of a change far before the public does.

As with all scientific discoveries with potential global impact, replicating the experiment is only the first step. The second, often much harder step and where most new discoveries die, is in whether or not it can be produced at scale.

From the article:
This complex-yet-simple concoction results from combining the minerals lanarkite (PbSO) and copper phosphide (CuP), which are then baked within a 4-day, multi-step, small batch, solid-state synthesis process.
