Aside from Malone over Bird, this could otherwise be a pretty reasonable list for guys he played with/against or grew up watching. I'd be curious to know how the question was phrased to him.

He was a stud before injury problems - IIRC still the only player to ever lead the league in scoring and assists in the same season - then still came back to make a few more All-Star games and was the starting PG for Boston for Bird's first championship. Obviously not a top 10 or even 20 player all-time, though.

Dr J chose mostly from his contemporaries, and he left Larry off because they were rivals.

We never saw Wilt or Bill Russell play but we know the numbers. 100 points in a game. 50 rebounds a gamein a season. Eleven Rings. Kareems skyhook, second all time in points. Oscar Robertson averaged a triple double in a season.

I imagine years from now, people will talk about Steph Curry as a guy who never missed a three. We talk about Iverson like he was a god with a basketball because he won that one game in the finals. Kobe Bryant somehow gets better every year now that hes gone. And no one puts Russel Westbrick in the conversation even though he averaged a triple double.

Basketball is still a team sport and even the most "let me solo them" Jordan / Kobe players in the league needed a team to actually do anything. They just end up being more like "my 10 favorite players" and individual skill metrics don't matter.

Im saying that perspective changes the way we view these guys. Middle schoolers today swear up and down that Lebron is better than Jordan, but those of us who saw both play will swear up and down that Jordan is better than anyone. And we make up bullshit arguments to support it based on what we see. Because the numbers dont matter because the game has been played so differently over the last thirty years.

I mean heres an extreme example, but every person that engages in these top ten lists essentially winds up sounding like skip bayless here. And why does Skip spew this garbage? Because in his mind, Michael Jordan was so far and away better than his peers that by default he has to be better than everyone whoever lived.
