i check out the wdw subreddit sometimes and notice weird comments (not like threatening or anything just kind of....strangely nerdy and specific) and i check the post histories and its like people active in like 50 different gun subreddits. being a gun nerd in itself confuses me but i live in texas and know some people like that, that talk about all the attachments and scopes and whatever. i just dont get it.

i forget florida is just a nuttier texas sometimes

i just dont get the appeal of collecting firearms. people talk about getting a new gun like its a new video game console. they talk about gun mods like its like customizing a pc. is it really that exciting? i mean all it does it make a little explosion to send a projectile to damage something. i dont want to hobby shame or anything but...why guns?

So I don't collect guns, but I have a few..

Just because you can't wrap your head around why it's interesting to somebody, that doesn't mean it doesn't have value. TONS of people would find modding a gaming PC pretty pointless. You don't get the appeal? Thats fine. They do.

right, i dont get the appeal which is why im asking. i have friends who are hobbyists in niche things like trains or geocaching or hell even being a disney amusement park nerd is weird, but i get it. im not a stranger to being a hobbyist in weird things. to me a gun is a tool to cause damage. thats like a dude collecting hammers or something, but even that makes more sense to me than guns because a hammer would see more use in daily life than a gun would. i guess there doesnt have to be a reason but i can still find it strange. at the very least its morbid. overclocking a pc to get 5 extra frames is weird but theres at least a productive outcome no matter how asinine. modding a gun so it kills and destroys things 5% more efficiently is morbid

But in their power fantasy fantasy life (and in the future potentially) they will use it.

Guns make them feel powerful and safe.

Think of it as a skillset instead... adding modifications to rifles and handguns to make it more accurate, or comfortable to be a better shooter. Archery is the same way..... You're trying to hit the target accurately ( the skill) and you're using modifications to get there... skill shooting is a hobby it doesn't HAVE to be about killing or destroying something just because it can.

Call me when a gaming pc is used to kill kids in an elementary school, mall, movie theater, office building, house, etc etc.

I'm not even really anti gun but its such a stupid comparison

Comparing Guns to Gaming PCs is stupid. No one looks at gun collectors as weird because of the idea of collecting. They look at gun collectors weirdly because guns in America are being used to kill kids in schools.

The comparison is facetious.

ok which is why i said his other comparison with archery made more sense to me

the gun hobbyists i know at least one of them explained it to me as some survivalist type govt overthrow scenario, 2nd amendment shit. i keep explaining to him if it got to that point his gun stash wont help him. the govt is going to use sound cannons and mind control rays to fuck us over, they probably have shit we cant even comprehend that guns cant fight against. but as another poster said its more about the fantasy of having power than actually having it

The whole comparison was to demonstrate that people have different hobbies and people who have a different hobby than you do might not understand your particular hobby and why it might interest you. Thats it.
