I had a dream that two of my dogs came up to me from out of a light. I knew they were gone, I probably knew I was dreaming, but I scratched them with one hand each. Then I remembered that I had another dog whose death really hurt me. And the two dogs parted and the eldest of the three came toward me. I embraced her with both arms.

It made me realize something about the first dog that I ever really lived with or could call a pet. The way that she died really redefined her. I haven't "forgotten" her, but I only ever think of her in terms of tragedy. That's unfair to who she was. She was more than her last hour. She was the sweetest, gentlest creature I ever knew -- and that includes humans.

This just reminded me of my very first dog who had forgotten about after all this time. I'm sad.

But what makes me even sadder is, I remember another dog at the same time, and can almost clearly see it, but can't remember anything else about it.

These were both almost 30 years ago, so I guess it's fair my memory isn't solid on them any longer, given how young I was.

I wish science would focus on figuring out how to make cats and dogs live a human lifespan
