Of course I checked myvisa requirements and passport expiry, it's well within the timeframe I'd be there.

But because of fucking BREXIT there's now some weird rule that isn't really advertised anywhere that your passport date of issue has to be within 10 years. My passport's date of issue is march 2013. I'm a few months out. So even though I have a valid EU passport and it's within the expiry date AND I have a return flight booked a few days later, it's likely I'll be turned away at immigration. And no refunds.

About a thousand bucks down the drain because of a weird rule like this.

I'm going to see if I can get an urgent passport but appointments are slim and im supposed to fly out on thursday.

That's not actually the rule I'm worried about. I have 4 months left but for poland they only ask for 3 months.

it's the date of issue thing which is such a bizarre, nonsensical rule I can't even understand why it's a thing.

But yeah fuck brexiteers. Hope they're happy swimming in the shit pool they ordered.

If you renew early they would add on the extra months, so i renewed mine like 8 months early or something

It can take up to 10 weeks. There's a backlog due to strikes.

I wonder if you can expedite the process. I know that was an option for when I got my passport. Not sure exactly how quickly that would make it. I would say it took me 4 to 6 weeks before I got mine without having it expedited.

Mine took 4 weeks, but that was probably lucky.

You can fast track it, but you have to attend an appointment in person, and the fee is higher (though a lot less than TC would lose on his holiday). Even then it takes a week and TC's flight is on Thursday.

There's a fast track service but appointments are limited and I keep refreshing the page to see if any slots free up.

Interesting and kind of illogical, as proven by your example.
I can't even renew mine until 6 months before expiration, iirc. Could be even 3.

A lot of countries require a minimum of six months left on a passport.

It worked and was normal here until brexit. Before brexit, you could have a UK passport that was valid in the eu for 10 years + whatever time you added by renewing early.

If you need a visa, probably.
If not, it's never been an issue for me.
I always applied for the new one with around 3 months left.

Actually, last one was expiring in June 2020 and I applied in May due to covid. It was extremely annoying to get it extended at the time. And then some months later they announced that IDs/passports will be valid past the expiration date during covid.

That bit confused me because my EU passport is just valid for 10 years from the date it was made. As in my last one was expiring in June 2020, but my current one was made in May, so it's valid until May 2030.

I have an appointment for an urgent passport renewel on wednesday. here's hoping it's succesful.

I am not looking forward to the next time I need to get a British passport, while not living there. Ive got until 2028 but Im sure it will come around quickly.
