Don't quite know if it's 'universally' hated, but I enjoyed the hell out of Saint's Row 3. Wacky, zany, and stupid, and I loved every second of it.

I didnt think that one was hated, I enjoyed it, but its the only one Ive played too.

Black mirror 2 and 3 for pc. I think the 1st game is well liked so didnt include it

Same. I've played through most of the series at this point and XIII-2 is still one of the peaks. I totally get the points against it though, I just personally had a lot of fun playing it. That said, I don't like either of the other XIII games nearly as much.

13 and Lightning Returns are two of the worst games in the franchise. 13-2 is one of the best. It's a very contrasting trilogy.

It has the same issue that a lot of platformers of the ps1/ps2 gen had where by the third game they don't really have much ideas of what to do with the central character and world so they throw in a bunch of shitty gimmicks and several playable characters of a sucky variety.

See: Crash 3, Ratchet and Clank 3, Sly Cooper 3

I don't think Spyro 3 is bad, but it's easily the lesser of the trilogy.

I'll also say Phantasy Star 3. It's easily my favorite of the Genesis PS games and the only one I cared to finish, all four routes too.

For me it didn't work for Crash 3, the 'gimmicks' weren't as fun as the platforming. However for Spyro 3 I really enjoyed playing as the other characters, the gameplay was well developed.

Games people hate but I like:
-Devil May Cry 2 (self explanatory but i like it)
Kingdom Hearts 3 (not really massively disliked but among the fanbase it's got its haters)
-Destiny (not as much nowadays but back when it was the active live service game it definitely was, especially at launch)
-Destiny 2 (kinda same boat as the previous game except its the active game so it's being currently hated on for one reason or another)
-Star Fox: Assault (love this one, probably my favorite after 64, but its not well regarded, though the reasons aren't completely unreasonable)
-Tales of Zestiria (not as well liked among the Tales games for sure but I like it enough, it's also got one of my favorite opening of Tales so there definitely some bias there)

castlevania 2 was the first game i ever beat and the avgn did that episode on it (which egoraptor promptly plagiarized) and it kinda got to be in vogue to hate on it because youtube said so.

also ff2. ff2 was actually pretty neat. it's a few tweaks away.

He has admitted multiple times that he considers it to be a fun but flawed game. The initial joke behind the Angry Nintendo Nerd character was, "Why would you complain about something that old?" It resonated with people and the character is still going. Next year, it'll be two whole decades since that first review of Simon's Quest.

I enjoyed some of the games that he trashed, like Friday the 13th and Godzilla, but I do not share in any positive feelings for Castlevania 2. It's meant to be beaten with a guide and that tears it for me. If I get lost, I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if this is a moment where I'm supposed to call 1-900-Konami. If I look up a guide and it turns out that I missed a hidden item that I should have been able to find under my own skill, then I've forever cost myself the thrill of an earned victory. And if I decide to soldier on and play the game under my own skills, I could be lost indefinitely because I'm supposed to look up a guide which tells me to eat a grilled cheese sandwich in the middle of a graveyard and cluck like a French hen three times so that a tidal wave will carry me to the next portion of the game.

I think people overblow how bad FF2 is. I was more into it than FF1 at least.

Its later ports improved on some of the issues.

Since so many people said DmC reboot...I'm gonna say Star Fox Zero. I don't like how the accessibility is crap with the over-complicated dual screen nonsense, but after I learned how the game works it was incredibly fun. Haven't had that much fun with the franchise since 64.

TMNT on NES. I've played through that game a ton and have even done several challenge runs.

I also like Resident Evil: Dead Aim, which I guess is more ignored than disliked. I don't have a CRT though so I can't play it with the light gun. :(

I really enjoyed Wolfenstein: Youngblood - and I just played through it solo within the last year on Switch when it was on sale for about six bucks.

I'm not sure why people hated it other than the main characters being kind of silly and annoying, but there wasn't a lot of story for them to be annoying, the focus was on the gameplay and you got to play how you wanted - I went with almost no stealth and heavy weapons blazing.

This is a recent opinion mostly thanks to James Rolfe the Angry Video Game Nerd. having grown up with the game, it was mostly liked back in the day. The graphics were good for the time, the music was good, it got the look of the 87' cartoon and the feel of the individual turtles down pretty well.

It's absolutely a flawed game, but if you grew up in the 80s and 90s, it was considered a good game.

Metal Gear Solid 5 - It isn't WIDELY hated but it's hated a lot. I enjoyed it.
Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City - it was fun if you played it with some people you knew.

I'm pretty sure opinions have changed, but the original RE4 was absolutely amazing but heavily hated on back in the day for taking RE into a new action-oriented direction instead of fixed camera survival horror. I liked RE5 as well.

I've played FF2 multiple times and am playing through the pixel remaster of it on Switch.

FFII is an interesting game honestly, and while its systems are very dumb and fucky I still kinda dig them?

Like, its dumb how you have to beat yourself up or allow yourself to get beat up to get more health, and now that I'm later on in the game, I'm at a point wwhere levelling magic requires me to force a bunch of characters to defend and make one character cast a spell on single enemy after single enemy and so on, which can definitely be a bit of a slog (thank god the pixel remasters have auto-battle)

That said I do love how customizable each character is and how each character are largely blank slates and you can make them as good with any particular magic or with any particular weapon that you want.

FF8 is a game with flaws but I still loved it. The soundtrack was amazing, the world was beautiful, and I really enjoyed most of the characters and plot events.

Didn't read the whole thread to see if these were mentioned before.

Project Sylpheed for one, which I think is pretty universally panned. The story was atrocious but I mostly had fun with the gameplay. Wish they didn't lock super good weapons until late in the game or it probably would have done better overall. Using the black hole cannon to annihilate capital ships was so fun.

Front Mission Evolved for another. I didn't play the earlier Front Mission games, so I can absolutely see why people would hate it for the genre shift. I thought it was a fun stompy mech game overall, but if I'd been invested in the series beforehand I probably would have hated it too. Again with a pretty terrible story.
