Its sad it pretty much did itself in with its proprietary format.

I actually liked it >_>

I was too young to consider the idea of ports and remakes as a bad thing. As long as I got to play games, I didnt really care.

I mean it sold 80 million units I think it did fine didn't it?

I remember when people saw the PSP and boldly claimed that was it for Nintendo dominance in the handheld market and that there was no way that the DS could ever compete and that Sony was going to now dominate the handheld space.

And then the Vita came out and people boldly claimed that was it for Nintendo dominance in the handheld market and that there was no way that the 3DS could ever compete and that Sony was going to now dominate the handheld space.

Spent a lot of hours looking at porn on my psp. I was like 10-12 years old at the time and didn't want to use the family pc in the living room.

Also I had my psp modded so I could play ps1 games on it. Well mainly so I could play spyro trilogy lol.

The GBA/DS ports almost always added some kind of functionality to fit the system, or were a different experience all together, due to the different nature of the system. Meanwhile, PSP ports were almost 1:1, except... Worse.

That was the issue.

Do Sony or Microsoft personally have that much more than 5 first party games? It's almost like this is true of every system. Unless you think God of War, Halo, and so on don't exist.

I remember having to hold Circle and then move the thumbstick to move the camera in Splinter Cell Essentials!

My GBA library was large and DS was even bigger.

I played like one game on PSP and it was Monster Hunter. Tried to play other games but none of them really stuck.

My biggest problems with the PSP were:

  • The controls were just straight ass.
  • It was so god damn pretty that I was afraid to play it and make it less pretty. Because every single touch was a nightmare in terms of leaving a mark on it.
  • Games weren't really ports or remakes they were actually demakes. New titles that were made worse to compensate for the lack of performance compared to the PS2. They were all just awful and completely unnecessary. It was basically just a completely stripped down version of the same thing you got on console. And I don't just mean visuals. All the games were as barebones as possible.

It just never found that same charm the Nintendo handhelds had. With that said I am not really a big fan of the Nintendo handhelds either. But I would take any one of them over a PSP.

I think the PSP's issue was it was too close to modern hardware, honestly. That allowed for rather lazy ports to appear for it, whereas on Nintendo consoles, developers had to work to meet the standards of the handheld. They couldn't just make a simple port and downgrade it, they had to meet lower specs, account for touch controls, and so on, which often resulted in new games instead of simple ports.

Now this is a hot take.

It's true, though. Look how many games on PSP ended up "X but worse," compared to DS, which got entirely new games. Guilty Gear didn't just do "Guilty Gear but worse," they made an entirely new game to take advantage of the DS's features. Hell, even cheap cash-ins like Skylanders, the DS games were basically entirely new games compared to the console versions, which focused on platforming more, while the PSP/Vita versions were just downgraded ports.

PSP got a few of its own hits, but otherwise it and Vita's library were primarily "Series you like, but worse," instead of actually trying new ideas, which devs were basically forced to do on DS. Very few DS games were "Series you like, but worse." They were new entries with different mechanics.

EDIT: I was slightly off, so I need to amend. Skylanders never released on PSP or Vita, specifically because they said it'd just be downgraded ports. It didn't release on DS, either, but did release on 3DS, as the "new games" that I referenced.

Please explain where I'm wrong, if you think I'm so biased. Was the PSP/Vita's problems NOT that they were basically "Series you like, but worse?" Because, by all accounts, it's almost universally agreed that is why they failed. They didn't offer anything new. If you have a counter argument, please present it.

PSP/Vita failed because, for the most part, they didn't offer anything new outside of the experience you could already get on PS3/PS4. They were criticized for mostly featuring boring ports. They had occasional gems, like Crisis Core and Birth By Sleep, but otherwise, all they offered was "Series you like, but worse." For instance, you'll pretty much never find anybody crowing about how good Uncharted: Golden Abyss was. It's mainly "This is Uncharted, but worse."

Meanwhile, DS/3DS legit forced developers to create new games, and it's why they reigned supreme.

It's no secret that Nintendo dominated the handheld market. You're the one that needs to provide any proof to argue against the common logic for why that was.

I'm not arguing for the Vita. And what proof do you have other than this subjectivity? You say everything you're saying is universally agreed? Please, your argument is as strong as my recollection of defending the PSP. I know you want to believe what you're saying is nothing but facts and reasonable but it's not, bro. And that's not an insult to have this objective reasoning to think one thing is better than another. Basically I simply wanna say we can agree to disagree but I'm not sure you'll accept that.

...Literally never once did I say what I said is objective, merely that it is supported by facts such as sales numbers. You're the one who is turning everything personal. If you have merits to argue with me, then present them.

I'm using an objective fact (the DS and 3DS vastly outperformed the PSP and Vita), and providing potential reasons as for why. Nothing more. You're the one who is getting offended by me doing so. Not sure why.

You made this topic. Support it with actual arguments, instead of attacking others, please.
