Voting is a constitutional right. We are all registered with the government when we are given an SSN. So why should we have to register to vote?

Here in Sweden, we automatically get a voting card some months before the election.
It contains information about where and when to vote.
And you dont even need it when you vote, an ID is enough. They prefer that you bring the voting card, but it is not required.

I honestly don't understand why everyone isn't automatically registered when you have your social security number and turn 18, then you can choose to vote or not.

There's no way this can't be implemented now with our modern post office and communications technology.

Because making people jump through hoops to vote (register, have ID, be able to wait in line, etc) disproportionately discourages certain demographics from voting.

Same here in Denmark. I admit i dont know if you can avoid bringing anything, i havent tried, and have no plan to.

IIRC: I just show up in the time frame allotted (IIRC 8-20) give the blanket, recite my SSN/Birthdate (dont recall specifics, but its either birthdate or SSN. Danish SSN is Birthdate in DD/MM/YY + 4 more numbers) go into the both with the long ass sheet of paper, sign a cross on the person i vote for, then put the long ass sheet of paper into a plastic bin outside the booth, and go home.

Ive not been eligble for voting that many times yet, but i dont remember much of a queue either, nor a lot of people around.

Admittedly, small city/town/whatever but still. The hardest part is the 2km walk lol.

And IIRC Inmates can vote too, which i believe isnt a thing in the US.

Being registered to vote makes you more likely to get selected for jury duty. If you're someone who never votes anyway that's a net negative.

I think some jails/prisons allow people to vote.
No more different than how some prisons offer jobs/education.

It is the opposite here.
We stand in line, get into the both, pick the note for the correct party, mark the candidate we vote on, put it in an envelope, go to a guy at a table, he takes the envelope and checks your ID/voting card and it is done.
We do 3 elections at once that are colorcoded and the envelope got a small hole at the bottom so the guy checks that you are not voting blue three times.

Make voter registration free (taxpayer funded) and automatic.
Make Election Day(s) federal and state holidays.
Give a tax credit to all voters for every election they participate in (including state and local).
Open more polling places, especially in metropolitan BIPOC communities with easy access via public transit.
Expand absentee and early voting.
Allow out of state workers and students to vote absentee.

Taken from a 2020 CNN article:

CNN: Why do we have voter registration in the US?
LK: Voter registration is there to make sure that voter rolls are accurate and updated. Elections in the United States are decentralized. They are administered at the county level. So voter registration is a regular and ongoing process to make sure that our elections are as inclusive, accurate and credible as possible.

Also make it illegal for most business to operate on Election Day and those that can remain open must limit hours and/or shift duration.

Penalties for violations will be severe. Like your entire profit + a % of revenue for the year + an additional flat fee +prison time.

All public transportation is completely free on Election Day and Taxi services must offer free rides as well(subsidized at cost by the government)

In the US inmates can't vote and in many states having a certain type of conviction can cause you to lose the right to vote.

There's nothing in the Constitution about preventing prisoner voting however.

The US custom evolved from the "vagrancy-chain gang-prison-disenfranchisement" system of Jim Crow states.

What fraud exactly do you think having and ID to vote is preventing? In person voter impersonation?

And, you're right. It's not just about race, though Black people are heavily affected by these laws. Other marginalized populations also face disproportionate barriers to voting because of these laws. Native American communities, low-income, elderly, and rural voters are disproportionately affected by voter photo ID laws.

i imagine in a perfect world a lot of this government rigamarole could be automated

like why do we file taxes when the gov knows all our shit

from an id perspective you probably at least have to go in to get your picture updated. I feel like process costs 80$ for drivers license and healthcare care card where i am in BC, probably 100 something for a passport. Maybe that could he made free ideally as well

Also not the address on my drivers' license.) and they were on vacation for like a month, so obviously I didn't show up. Nothing ever came of it.
