If you have Windows Defender active, you don't need one. Anti-virus software is becoming irrelevant.

That's not an anti-virus.

I do have Windows Defender Firewallm turned on, is that the same?

Does it automatically check downloads/Save as files when I download, or do I have to do something special to make sure something doesn't have a virus?

Windows Defender by default is good enough. If you're that concerned, download the free version of Malwarebytes and run a scan every once in a while.

It's really difficult to get viruses these days unless you carelessly download random stuff from sites riddled with ads and pop-ups.

That's like having your window rolled up and asking it's the same as a car. It's a part of the car.

And yes, it does that last bit.

Avast is annoying but functional and free.

Youre only going to get a virus if youre downloading dodgy stuff or going to bad websites. Windows defender is perfectly fine for almost everyone.

I used to be a computer technician. I think antivirus software barely works because most malware these days tricks you into allowing it through the antivirus.

Viruses aren't in style anymore. Most malicious people are attempting to trick you via email to hand over your credentials. This has led to anti-virus and Anti-Malware programs being worthless.

Windows Defender + common sense is all you need installed on your computer.

Windows key > Type "Security" > go to the first result should be the "Security at a glance" window that will tell you if your virus protection is good or not.

Locking your files is still quite common.

And so are malware apps
