I last played it like 2 years ago and only managed to get to the fight with the dragon that took your heart at the beginning

i played a sorcerer and was using some pawns from some friends who i have since fallen out of favour with and no longer have access to.

How's melee or archery? and does anyone want to add me on steam to use pawns?

I want to kinda try a melee build, either magick knight or strider. *Yes, I know the Sorcerer and Assassin have the best stat growth*

i did add one that evens out the stat growth for the hybrid vocations

as well as some that modified carry weight and unnerfed some things that got smashed with the nerf bat by Capcom

Magick Archer's a ton of fun. Just like others said though, ideally you mod in different stat gains. IIRC Magic Archer prioritizes magic defense for some reason, even though you're already a mixed attacker.

Strider is my favourite class. I've tried all the others but always go back to strider.

One good tip I leaned is to first level up as a warrior to get clout and as a fighter to get vehemence, together they give a 30% increase to strength when you switch to strider, which means a 30% increase to all melee damage.

For pawns I always have a mage as my main pawn just for anodyne which is useful for the weird hybrid damage system in the game. In the base game I'd say rangers and striders make the best hired pawns, but they get pretty useless in BBI because they just don't do enough damage. Sorcerers do the most damage when you get to BBI but they also get knocked out a lot. Most damage will be from you.

Base game is tough at first but really easy after a certain point. Just keep doing side missions to keep your level moving upwards.

BBI is super hard especially at first but just keep at it. The gear you get from finishing the base game will do you well once you get it gold rated. Side missions won't be as useful at this point for exp but can give you good gear.

BBI gear is the best but it's completely randomised so you might end up with 50 garbage hats in a row when you just want one ring that gives you the best melee move in the game. I gave up on the rng grinding and used a mod to give myself the rings I wanted.

i started as a strider and made my pawn a fighter.

then my game crashed so i'm taking a break and will probably restart once i figure out what caused it.

probably a mod.

Fighter and warrior pawns will just run around in circles most of the time. Rangers and striders will at least use useful melee attacks or snipe everything with powerful bow special attacks, but as I said once you get to BBI their attacks will become pretty useless because anything physical needs to have the best equipment and the best skills, and most pawns won't have that. I played a couple months ago on pc and I found that even at high levels, any non-magic pawns would have weak gear, or spam low damage attacks like trap and trigger that are effective at the start of the game but just don't scale at all after a certain point. Meanwhile mage or sorcerer pawns were more effective because their magic attacks scale more with their level and aren't as dependent on gear. In any case definitely review pawn's gear and special attack roster before hiring them, and make sure they have useful inclinations like scather and challenger so they'll actually attack enemies and protect you and won't just rush around opening chests.

The reason pawns tend to have weak gear is that most players understandably focus on their own character's gear first, and only the player's gear can be dragonforged to get the best upgrades. You really have to be dedicated to get all your pawn's gear gold dragonforged.

i had a warrior pawn when i played my sorcerer who had good gear that i didn't dragonforge but 3 starred.

i got lots of praise for that one

Don't play a caster the first time through imo.

You have to level classes you don't plan on playing in order to get perks from each. I recommend looking up a good Strider or Fighter build for a first playthrough and see what they recommend for perks.

EDIT: There's a really nice pair of daggers on a hill with a carving of a man wielding a spear on it. Poke around and you'll find them. :)

I tried magick archer but just got bored of how you can just lazily lock on to everything and fire and forget homing missiles to plink away at everything. Strider and ranger meanwhile have the most fun bow system in a 3rd person melee game ever.

Just remember that "wolfs hunt in packs"!

For your team make sure you have a fighter, strider and sorcerer in your team.

Get a mage/sorcerer pawn that has healing magic and can put fire or ice enchantment on your Arisens weapon. I go fighter and it was brilliant being able to fight ghosts and mystic knights thanks to the enchantments my hired pawn could put on my sword.

Just watch out for Death appearing on Bitter Black Isle.

Make sure to have some ferrystones on you at all times to get back to Gran Soren or Cassardis quickly and to escape any encounters quickly that you are losing.

Assassin and Sorcerer are my favourite classes to use. The level of min maxing required for assassin is insane, so I won't begrudge if you do download a mod to even out stat distribution. Magick Archer is a great class, but is suited more towards max level engagement, when you have your stat allocations evened out.

Archer classes in general are the best, Strider has some great skills. Helm Splitter, Leaping Stone, Mad Dash, good combination.
You can actually sequence break Witchwood, the "exit" ledge can be reached as early as having double jump. There's a few other sequence breaks, too.
Some portcrystal placement suggestions: aforementioned exit ledge for Witchwood, Shadow Fort, Greatwall, intersection near Bluemoon Tower and the Hill Figure.

Something helpful for side-character quests
https://i.vgy.me/JK7VZR.png

Quina's in particular gives you some of the best consumables in the game. Talent in Bloom's item you can copy at the Black Cat then leave one in your inn storage before finishing the quest (it does "rot" after a day in your regular inventory so there's a bit of a rush involved, but the copies in your inn storage "reset" after 3-4 days in game time). A Parting Gift's reward can also be forged but bare minimum you can get 5 from the quest, 10 if you play it correctly.

Basically what I do, between that and Cassardis/Gran Soren already having ones, that will more or less cover the whole map. I put one right outside of Bluemoon Tower because you have to go back there quite a bit, but don't need to do much else in that bandit canyon area. I put the westernmost portcrystal at the rest camp near Devilfire Grove because I constantly go there fairly early on to try and get dragonforged stuff off the dragon, and it isn't that far from the shadow fort or other locations in that part of the map.

It worked very well on almost everything except bosses with specific weak points.

Usually went Ranger for them, nothing says "fuck your eyeball" like launching thirteen arrows into it at once.
