Despite looking like ass, it's one of the greatest games ever made and hardly anyone has played it.

HR was good too but no where near as versatile. MD and Invisible War shit the bed too.

Resident Evil 6 sold 11 million copies meanwhile the entire Deus Ex franchise sold 14 million and most of those were HR.

That makes me sad :(

I want more games to be like Deus Ex.

The picture might not be as prolific a few years ago but I still see it.
And it never goes beyond stuff like that. It's kind of like how MGR fans just quote it or type lyrics.

I guess people are either already on board or resigned to accepting no one is gonna play it.

The graphics suck and it's a bitch to get running on modern computers without patches. Also it's ending is lame.

Everything else is GOAT tier.

It's an immersive sim, inspired by System Shock. You have an enormous level of freedom of how to complete your objectives and build your character's skills/abilities. The levels are largely open and are full of multiple paths/side objectives/lore/secrets, things you can unlock, hack, various weapons, stealth etc. Most of which are STILL ahead of what "Play it YOUR way!" games today include.

The game is paced exceptionally well and full of interesting characters who bring up different perspectives and get the player thinking about various subjects (Even if it's a little baby's first philosophy)

Even basic things like pushing the player towards lethal or non lethal play which is common now are in Deus Ex but there's no "morality meter" or "Decide which one you're gonna do". Instead game design and well written characters just tell you to not hurt people or massacre enemies at will and you, the player decide who is more convincing or what you would do in that situation with the resources and patience you have.

There is a huge amount of visual storytelling that is done expertly and a ton of worldbuilding that has proven to be quite prophetic 23 years later. The sheer amount of homelessness, terrorism, rise of the 1%, dangers of AI, Internet misinformation, eagerness to believe rhetoric themes in the game are all things which while not Nostradamus predictions are more relevant today than they were in 2000 and will be more relevant in 2050 than they are today.

But despite all that it never takes itself too seriously and forgets that it is a video game. You get giant robots, you get Triads figthing with laser swords, you get humor and bonkers conspiracy theories. A big part of the game is "imagine if every dumb Conspiracy theory was actually right and see what happens"

Hell they even don't have the Twin Towers in the Skyline, which is a coincidence but crazy for a game about conspiracy theories.

There's even stuff you can do that most other games past and present do not allow. Like for example (almost) every NPC in the game is killable and there are several boss/important fights where you can literally just ignore them and leave.

The game rarely stops you from doing whatever you want to do. Even if it's not dramatic.

It's just good. It's really good.

The 3rd game HR is also good but it's much more modern. It's pretty much just "Wanna shoot everything with guns or crawl through vents?" Deus Ex 1 was much more open and varied and thoughtful than that. It could afford to be because it's graphics were so shit, they can design the levels with much more depth.

I had major bugs and crashes before installing fan patches and I was far from the only one.

This was a while ago so I dunno if Steam has put the fan patches into the retail product because I know they've done that with some games like Vampaire the Masquerade.

Okay I gave it a look. Some gameplay, some reviews, a speedrun.

I like that they just give you a bunch of options and turn you lose, but talking up a game for having options and actually wanting to use them in game are another story. After a while you become too aware of what's an interesting kind of different and what just makes the game a little more tedious.

Combat doesn't look like all that, enemy AI looks like it's all over the place, speech looks like it bulldozes this game the same way it does New Vegas. I'm not an enormous fan of grey and brown bunker looking areas. Protag doesn't do much for me.

I redact the assumption it sucks, it's probably all right if you're to the dystopian future with robots kinda thing. I don't really go for stuff like that.

I don't think you can remake Deus Ex.

Pretty much the only reason it can be so deep is because it has such basic graphics

Look how much less varied and interactive HR was and that game had like a 7 year Dev cycle

I mean the majority of the stuff in Deus Ex is still not done in modern games

The only areas it's dated are graphics and menu interface

I don't see how the writing or game design or music is dated or boring at all.

I don't see how you can make it a "Modern FPS" without destroying everything else in the game. If it was just rows of Chest High Wall Arenas with pinpoint shooting off the bat then the need to explore or hack or talk to people or experiment with weapons/items is lost.

We kinda saw that in HR and MD where "play it your way" just turned into "Shoot the guy or crawl through a vent" on repeat.

I don't think Destiny 2 is an evolution of Deus Ex, it's just a different game and a worse one IMO

The original Deus Ex made running and gunning with weapon vareity and good level design a constant viable option but rarely the smartest or msot rewarding one. I'd argue that's more advanced than most modern game design.

I never understood how Call of Duty and the cover shooter genre took off. Ive been playing Counter-Strike since it came out (predating CoD) and its better than it. You take cover organically, not by pressing a button that attaches you to a designated chest high wall with velcro.

I love how much it rewards the player for trying to mess with it.

Oh this agent is gonna betray me here? What happens if I lay a bunch of mines beforehand? Holy shit it works!

Oh my friend is killed by a bomb? I wonder if I can reload an earlier save and prevent it. I can?!

I love games that dare you to experiment and Deus Ex is still a king of player agency.

Took me over a decade to find out you can actually save Paul. I for sure thought he was just dead in the game. It truly is remarkable how many subtle things you can do and change without even realizing it. No game has done it better, still.
