Need to keep those private prisons stuffed.

But honestly, I don't think Americans in general are very favourable towards rehabilitation.

Post something about a crime on here and you are more likely to get posters calling for them to be raped and beaten in general population than be reformed.

It seems we Americans have vengeance confused for justice.

America has for profit prisons
So rich people actually make money for every person locked up
So it's in their best interest to keep people locked up longer and to use them as a source of free labor
It's why people of color are more likely to get jail time and the while system is designed to turn small time offenders into repeat offenders

Who says it doesn't? People do believe in it. This is a good and a bad thing.

Minor crimes see people get out. There are clinics to help people struggle with addiction. They gotta choose to work on themselves. Lots of us had a wild youth after all.

Unfortunately not everyone can be rehabilitated, that's why major criminals like sex predators, stalkers, and serial killers are let back out only to continue severely harming others. Their asses should stay in prison permanently. Unfortunately some people don't feel like they should. Those people are idiots.

-Rampant individualism creates a hostile environment. Rather than seeing a criminal as a fellow person, you would instead see them as a potential threat to your own well being, regardless of whether they are rehabilitated.

-"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect." Right wing ideologies are defined by their subscription to hierarchies and social order. While they aren't strangers to making up arbitrary hierarchies, they certainly wouldn't refuse the opportunity to use a semi-justifiable one either, and portraying criminals as second class citizens is just that
