It is worth noting that not professing a belief in any specific god is not atheism. These people are not suddenly becoming more rational. Still anything that breaks the grip religion in general has on politics is a good thing.

I personally went through alot of things in my life to not think there isn't a higher being looking out for us. Too many events that happened to dismiss it as coincidence, nor I consider myself THAT lucky. Rather than saying God, I just go with the holy spirit.

To be fair things are seemingly getting worse for the average working class person, which is the majority of the US population so of course they are going to lose faith in a allegedly benevolent omnipotent being that is supposed to be looking out for them if they are pious and submissive "enough".

What are Christians even offering? Stop being kind, accepting liberals and come join us, ignore our Bible with us, spread your hate! You too can be a constant hypocrite and act like an asshole in public when you have a Bible to hide behind.

Why aren't people joining our religion?!

It's so easy to be a good Christian and yet so many idiots fuck it up.

Love thy neighbor. Don't be a fucking prick. It's that simple.

That's not enough for God according to the Bible, but hell, what you said right there at least puts people on the right track towards being a decent human being.

Evangelicals can blame themselves. They've thrown their lot in with a man who'd tick all the boxes for the Antichrist and expect us to take them seriously. A lot of Christianity in America is also rooted in White Supremacy.
This.

Evangelicals and the religious Right have ruined the faith for a lot of people in this country.

My mother can't accept the fact that I'm not a Christian. The sad part of it is I'm not an atheist either but she still acts like I am one.
Yeah, some religious people act like faith is a binary. My mom is the same way; she always says that there are two types of people in this world: people who are Christian, and people who are not.

Tbf, I bet a good deal of young adults who believe aren't actively showing their faith and it's more of a holdover from their upbringing.

I think you're confusing courtesy and morals. Most everyone probably thinks they're morally in the right. That's a lot more subjective and varies from place to place and country to country.

You know i think so too. I want to say that many millennials are only holding on to religion for their parents sake. Most are only religious because they were indoctrinated at a young age and the thought of breaking their parents hearts keeps them from leaving thier religion.

I'd say misotheism counts.

I do think the decline of organized religion is going to lead to more spiritual diversity not less like antitheists want. It'll be interesting to see a world where stances like misotheism and dystheism become more common.

If a personal god exists that's the only type that makes sense.

I believe in a hands off creator deity who set everything in motion and moved on to create something new.

I'm open to a deity who can intervene in macro ways like preventing an asteroid or comet from hitting earth but I cannot believe in a micromanaging God who intervenes to stop small tragedies from happening.

A fear of being ostracized was probably most people biggest deterrent to walking away from religion. But now more and more people seem to not give a damn anymore.

The church's crime and hypocrisy has become pretty common knowldge now due to spcial media.

And more people nowadays are just more accepting of death. Which if you don't fear it or care/believe in a afterlife then religion becomes practically worthless.

And also because now we actually know where things like lightning come from. We dont need fanfiction to explain it.

How does that correlate to crime rates?

More religious countries tend to have higher rates of violent crime and violent crime has decreased as the world has become less religious. But this is a correlation and likely the common factor here is simply access to better education and higher quality of life.

I'm definitely in this camp. I pretty much only pay lip-service to Christianity for the sake of my mother at this point.

I mean, the actual lessons Jesus taught, are those that I live by, but I don't really believe in the faith anymore.

And morals are at all time low. Strange.

I don't know what you're basing that on but let's suppose, for a moment, that you didn't pull it out of your ass.

We have a man elected to the presidency after declaring an entire nation of people to be rapists and after boasting that he sexually assaulted women. This man later allied himself with nazis and ordered babies to be ripped from their mothers' arms and to be permanently separated from them.

The very people who proclaim themselves to be the nation's morality police are the selfsame people who enthusiastically, proudly, BOASTFULLY supported all of this. So if the very people who want everyone to join the 700 club are looking at what the Bible says, taking a big dump on everything Jesus taught, and doing everything they can to do the OPPOSITE of Christ, what message does that send to the "unbelievers"?

"Godly" people need to clean up their own fucking house, or as their savior would say, pull the plank out of their own eye first, because nobody is going to take a message of repentance seriously from people who are more worthy of Hell than Satan himself.
