Back then, all that was widely available was dairy protein powder.

Thank goodness there is more variety nowadays.

Vegan protein is usually inferior to the normal stuff, so I don't use it.

Most are made with whey, an animal product.

Not surprised, it's ridiculously hard to reach a high protein intake with just vegan foods. So you basically need supplements like this. And even then the protein ratio isn't as high as Whey protein

People will say tofu is a good replacement for chicken, but it's really not close. 100 calories of grilled chicken has about 20g protein. 100 calories of tofu only has about 10g protein. Literally half of the protein content is not a "good" replacement

I would love to at least try going vegan but as a weightlifter, I need to hit a certain amount of protein per day. And doing so with just vegan foods would be much, much harder to do than with animal products

I spent the last year and a half bulking after about four years focusing on fat loss and maintenance. I was consuming around 160g of protein a day and eating seitan or having pea protein to hit that goal.

I quit because I just felt like shit eating that much protein. I felt sluggish and started having digestive issues after having almost zero problems there for years. It's not that different from how I felt before going vegan.

I went back down to my usual 90-100g of protein and everything sorted itself out within a couple of months. I felt great in general but my lifting did not suffer at all. I even hit a few PRs before I had to quit because of a medical emergency. I'll be back on it soon though, and I won't up the protein intake again.

I sort of had a similar phase where I went all in on protein, but then I realized I was lifting because I like lifting and it wasn't about being as bulky as possible. I didn't enjoy eating all that protein (same story, vegan, didn't feel good eating piles of protein). Way happier now just having normal amounts of protein.

I used to be really fat and now have an over developed lower body that makes my objectively lacking upper body look even worse. My main goal is just to fill out enough to make them match better. I don't have any desire to get massive or anything like that. I do enjoy lifting though, and getting stronger. It's always nice to notice yourself becoming more capable both with the weights and in real world applications.

I was doing fine without higher protein intake and I don't see any reason that wouldn't have continued but there's such a heavy emphasis on it that ultimately I felt like I had to try it out for myself. I didn't notice any worthwhile difference in my ability to lift, recover, or develop muscle. Even if it didn't make me feel like shit, I don't think it's worth the input.
