Never played enough of 3 to know which is better but I personally loved the grind in 2. Getting an OP character to make runs to kill everything to hopefully get better drops is pretty fun. Unsure if 3 is anything like that.

Gameplay I could take it or leave it, but 3's artstyle was fucking awful.

because more people like it? that's not exactly a quantifiable question. 3 eventually found it's niche, but it was very rough at first, and some people never gave it another chance. but even at it's best, it's pretty repetitive, even for a genre that relies on repetition. there's just more to do in 2, imo, and more ways to do it. and the loot itself, which let's be honest, is the reason for the genre to even exist, is a much more interesting chase than in 3, where all you're ever really looking for is a better roll of the 12 pieces of gear your wearing. in 2, you use a lot more rares, which have a lot more variance, plus runes and charms... you get that dopamine hit more steadily.

Nostalgia and the idea was more original back then. People used to actually dig the story and characters and not just look for op builds to grind with...until later

I actually had more fun with 3, but I played AFTER the expansion came out, so apparently I missed out on some flaws that got patched out earlier. Sometimes it pays to be late to the party.

I heard loot system in 2 is infinitely better

I know this topic is old but I like the higher degree of build choice in 2. In 3 your skills are predetermined, and I don't enjoy that. Now, to be fair, I didn't play 3 much because I was turned off by the lack of choice, so maybe it gets better later on, but I don't care enough to find out.

Grinding is more fun, art style is better even in the original D2 but D2R is even better with the modern graphics, items mean a lot more and good items just don't shit out from thin air and at a high rate that D3 does although I did find D3 fun too

D1 had it. Castle/Catacombs/caves/hell. Butcher. Bam! Perfect atmosphere.

I actually was playing Diablo 3 for the story too and lore (which is foolish) but also Diablo 3 went through so many changes even though I didn't follow this to such a close level as some historians have now it was obvious it was rebuilt/scraped and re-tooled a lot. While I don't automatically discount desert levels in games, the desert level in Diablo 2 was horrible. The enemies were incredibly annoying and it was so boring. At least in Diablo 3 they had a desert level too but they also had a Oasis section too which it was just all more interesting, Oh yeah the jungle sucked in Diablo 2 as well.

Not saying Diablo 3 is better than 2, but it did have some interesting locale spins. Diablo 1 is basic af, but it really nailed the atmosphere.

The art style of 3 isn't as good as it is in 2, 2 had better build choices and 2 does many things better than 3 does.

2 just had a different vibe. It was more of an old-school RPG...and people grew up with it, so there's bias. Personally, I think D3 is way better than D2 just based on the gameplay alone. It was fast-paced, responsive, and overall fun. It was lacking things like trading and PvP which made D2 a more socially-driven experience, though.

What bugged me about 3 was there were no player lobbies and early on there were bots everywhere. I mean since there were no player lobbies how were you going to meet people? Oh in the realm channels oh they are spammed with bots constantly. Well this is awkward.

Yeah, old-school B.net games had an inherently social nature because of the lobbies and chat rooms. Newer Bnet stuff lost that essence when they abandoned that framework. The fact you could join chat rooms for other games, too, made it a whole network. You could talk to people who were playing Starcraft, or WC2/WC3, and just hang out...

I do miss that classic internet vibe of sitting in a chatroom for 80% of the day, then finally playing a few rounds of a game when the mood struck. That's why I loved WoW so much--most of the game was a chatroom, be it a dungeon party, Trade chat, or just random stuff said in a battleground.

2 feels a lot more like an actual rpg with character build choices and is very replayable. 3 feels like I am controlling an array of flashing lights with very little feedback to my character build decisions for the majority of the game, and the way that loot is constantly upgrading every 2 minutes makes nothing you find feel worth caring about for 95% of the game. Its basically like adhd: the game

^ yea. The lobby removal or at least a good chat solid chat channel in an social experience/mmo was excellent. The Secret World had custom made chat channels. And rarely were they spammed with buy or sell spam. It was just people chatting or asking fir dungeon help, advice etc.

Diablo 2: Pick a class, don't fuck up your skill choices!, find good gear, beat Hell mode

Diablo 3: Play the campaign (lmfao), pick some skills (or don't, you can just re-pick them literally whenever the fuck you want), spend 20 billion hours grinding, go from Torment 84722163921 to Torment 84722163922, repeat until the the universe collapses on itself
