Better casting would have just made the movie worse and more forgettable. Without Brian Thompson playing the melodramatic Shao Khan or Musetta Vander's terrible, no good very bad Sindel, Annihilation would just be a bad video game movie with too many fight scenes and not enough plot.

I still like Annihilation for its so bad its good qualities but its not a good movie.

Me and my brother dragged our dad to the local mall to go see Annihilation in theaters.

That terrible CGI in Annihilation.

They made Kano Australian in the game because people liking his Australian accent in the movie.

I wasn't saying that casting would have fixed Annihilation. Just that the original was so well cast and Annihilation was a terrible disappointment as a result.

New Sonya had nothing on the lovely Veronica Vaughn.. I liked Jax... Highlander Raiden very much missed.

The first was really good at combining fan service with an actual film surrounding it. Annihilation is just fan service packaged with awful cgi and nothing else.

That Annihilation mud fight was pretty hot.

When I was a kid I thought the dude dressed as a samurai was Leslie Nielsen's character from Surf Ninjas.. like I assumed it was the same universe because martial arts.

I think they killed Sub-Zero in the first movie in such a lame way (also in a way that wouldn't actually work) because they realised they made him by far the strongest fighter in the tournament. Of the few fighters who legit had super powers? His were portrayed in the most broken manner.

Yeah.. they took the video game mechanic because it was cool.. and were like "Well fuck people won't just thaw out the moment he touches them... Just make them shatter.. way cooler."

"How are they gonna defeat him?"

"Uhh...."

Oh, they made him even more busted than in the games. In the movie if he was channeling his cold powers as I recall you couldn't even approach him without anything that touched his '"aura" freezing.

At least in the games you had the chance to avoid his freezing attacks.

It was the 90s, not completely fucking up a video game movie back then was the rare exception. I like to think they just got lucky and managed to pull off a decent (not great) movie in spite of themselves.

This is coming from someone who is not much of a Mortal Kombat game fame, but loved Super Mario Bros. and Street Fighter 2: I saw all three of these movies in theaters when they released, and let me tell you... SMB and SF are so bad it's good at best... technically, those two movies had a bigger name cast than Mortal Kombat, but Mortal Kombat managed not to fuck it up until the sequel.

Seriously, even with actors like Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, Dennis Hopper, Jean Claude Van Damme, Kylie Minogue, and Raoul Julia... they couldn't make the confused messes of Street Fighter 2 and Super Mario Brothers into even okay movies.

Yeah, Mortal Kombat with barely any star power... aside from washed up Chris Lambert and not well known Brigette Wilson (the hot chick from Billy Madison, that's about it) they did what should have been super easy - just make a martial arts tournament film. For god's sake, you can just watch Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon.

I have to give a lot of credit to the set designers. When they weren't doing those how did I not notice as a kid awful cgi transitions, the individual sets were really cool. Annihilation had some too, they just decided to go wayy heavier with the awful CGI.

The soundtracks to both are still active in my workout playlists.

Would anyone Street Fighter was targeted at know who Raoul Julia is?

Of course! - It's "So Bad it's Good" - it's great for how silly and cartoonish it is. Julia is easily the best thing in the movie, but it's precisely because the movie is such a mess and he sort of winks at the camera and then delights in chewing the scenery.

Essentially the villains are all having fun while the good guys are boring. How does a movie manage to not make me excited to see sexy Kylie Minogue as Cammy? Come on!

off the top of my head i remember her in last action hero and i know what you did last summer
in last action hero she played arnolds daughter but its not really a major role. she gets one cool scene and then kind of disappears from the story

It's not a good movie, but it's an enjoyable concept with Mortal Kombat flair. Probably because it's a copy paste of an actually good movie with Mortal Kombat aesthetics painted over it.
