Metas new social media app Threads says it will limit the amount of posts some users can see the same action that rival social network Twitter took earlier this month.
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri made the announcement in a Monday post on Threads, saying that spam attacks have picked up so were going to have to get tighter on things like rate limits, which is going to mean more unintentionally limiting active people (false positives).
Twitter was widely criticized for capping the number of posts that can be read. Amid that backlash, Threads launched and within days became one of the most widely downloaded social media apps for U.S. users.
But in blaming spammers, Threads named the same reason that Twitter previously cited when it instituted limits.

But, in actuality, Threads' rate limits are not like Musk's much-maligned limits at all. According to Meta employees, Threads is not limiting the amount of posts users can view, which is what Twitter did.
The rate limits on Threads instead targets common spammy behavior, such as the amount of comments made and number of users that an account can follow over a certain period of time.
"Hope they realize were talking about action rate limits (eg following, commenting) rather than viewing rate limits," Threads engineer Jesse Chen said to me in reply to one of my posts about rate limits on the platform. "Both platforms have always had the former type of rate limits"

As I understand it they rolled it ridiculously early because Musk was being such a dipshit.

Should probably think of it as somewhere between an alpha and beta version.

There were very little things Threads had to do to be better than Twitter and already they just tripped and fell and landed on a spike headfirst

Imagine making a Twitter competitor only to speedrun the same failures.
