I've voted Republican, and I don't think swordz9's take here is entirely wrong. In fact, I'm not even sure it's partly wrong. Even though Republicans like to talk about being the party of Lincoln, they haven't been during the lifespan of any person here on B8. They also aren't the party of Reagan. If old Ronny was alive and mentally fit today, he would rail against Trump and his followers. Reagan would have probably tried to do everything in his power to destroy Trump after he asked Russian hackers to attack Hillary, despite the party line difference. They do act like a cult of personality, and they do ignore the values that the party held even a decade ago.

So when I see you casually ask the question like that, considering the broad scope of our nation's political history, it really sounds like "so you didn't drink the kool-aid?"

Havent so far and considering what Trump did to the party youd have to be extremely anti-American to even consider voting R now. Everything they want to do only benefits themselves (the government ones at least not the general voters) and the 1%. They want to rip apart any kind of security net or help for anyone else. That party lost their fucking marbles the second a non-white man became President and then we got Trump who just emboldened the bigotry they already felt and made them become unafraid to flaunt it out in the open. Theyre a party with no empathy for anyone who isnt exactly like them so fuck them.

Ignoring the current economy I see. It isn't helping those you claim to support, in fact they are suffering more than ever.

Oh I completely agree. It's a shame we can't have a party who excels both socially and fiscally. I don't support either party, I think they're both trash and unfortunately we'll never elect an independent in our current political climate.

Ahh yes, gotta cut taxes for billionaires. It'll all trickle down eventually. Can't give people healthcare or housing or education. Gotta save money for the big businesses who'll pay themselves 90% more, and then if they're feeling generous give their workers a 2% raise.

You literally can't vote for economics in the US. Trump printed 14 tril and Biden printed 8 tril. Like yeah Biden is better but look at the numbers you're comparing. Trump also raised taxes on everyone making 75k and up while Biden is only 400k and up.

What sucks about Trumpism is that the R party will never be a party of economics again. It's way too successful as fear driven identity politics. At least in the past there was a modicum of economics discussion, even if it was mostly BS.

Our only way to fix it is to completely stamp out any ember of Trumpism to the point that Rs realize it will never be successful again. Then maybe they can pivot to a new idea which includes actual conservative economics. It's a long multi step process that may not even happen in our lifetimes.

Problem: Trumpism may not be a long-term winning strategy for Republicans, but conservative economics is even more unpopular. If the GOP ever drops the culture war stuff and focuses on right-wing economic ideas instead, they'll get killed every election.

Yep. There is not a single policy that the Republican party would push that actually has popular support nationwide. They've turned to culture wars because they'd otherwise be irrelevant at the national level. Even in red states, we're seeing abortion bans being defeated. No one wants to get rid of Obama Care anymore, since it works. Most people have figured out that the Democrats are the party that are actually fiscally responsible, even if it's because they are forced to. Everyone has witnessed that the Supreme Court has turned into a joke. We live in some strange reality where instead of treating the Russians with deep suspicion, we now have a former President who went on TV and asked Russian hackers to attack one of his political opponents. They have no real values anymore, not even the ones the used to have, and they only exist to stand in the way of and frustrate the adults in the room that are trying to find solutions to the problems we face.

That's true, but I'm not talking about ancap ideas. Democrats have implemented a lot of policies that reduce spending and increase economic freedom, like ending the war in Afghanistan, legalizing marijuana markets and breweries. Trump also did 1 great thing with QBI which is awesome for small businesses. Those policies are popular and could easily be the identity of the Rs if they chose it. They could beat Democrats on the budget surplus. It would then be a much more rational thing to consider R.

Has Commodore always been.... like this?

But yeah it's gonna be Biden vs Trump again. Desantis doesn't have the cultist vote and there's really no other Democrat that's making enough waves to be a viable replacement for Biden.

And yeah, Trump 100% goes on a revenge tour if he wins. That's probably the end of a lot of human rights so...

But even if Biden wins twice, we still have the current GOP going more and more insane. I unfortunately don't see them going back to standard fare bigotry once this is all over with (I mean, they shouldn't be bigots at all, but they were at least putting up the facade of being civil before). Not sure if there's any viable options regarding them.

Trump will likely do worse than last time. The hardcore followers won't abandon him, but everything from Jan 6 onwards related to him is going to drive some people away from him and basically no one toward him. It also doesn't help him that state GOP parties in the swing states where lawsuits were pursued are broke because of the pointless legal battles and recounts.
