Atlanta from firsthand experience, though people who driven through both LA and ATL say LA takes the cake. I've also heard Washington DC touted as having the worst traffic in the country.

NYC, LA, Boston are probably all up there.

Atlanta is godawful too.

Phoenix on the other hand is usually shockingly smooth for a metropolitan area with five million people.

Kind of a strange metric they're basing it on. I've seen the same videos most of us have of some of the insane traffic in areas of Asia, shit that looks like the thunderdome on crack, and you can't convince me any US city is worse than that.

I always say that about Phoenix. Mostly grid layout and they planned ahead with multilane roads. Also they do construction during the night mostly which helps too.

Can confirm. I expected driving there to be hell, but it was honestly amazing. Grid setup means no old people getting lost and going 20 under.

yeah I lived in Tempe for a while and it was real nice. 4-5 lanes on each side on major roads and a left turn lane in the middle. and all concrete so no potholes

I've never been to LA or NYC but driving in Boston sucks. and now the trains are catching on fire all the time.

I lived in Portland Oregon in the early 2010s and traffic was horrendous during rush hour. Like sitting dead still for half an hour or more at a dead still regularly. You could pretty much walk as fast as you could get anywhere by car.

their roads were just not built for the population surge going on at the time.

LA traffic is insane but NYC is worse

Bumper to Bumper barely moving

At least with LA it's still faster to drive than walk on foot Idk if I can say that about NYC, the Subway is basically mandatory there.

I drove in Manhattan one time 20 years ago when I was there with my wife for a friends wedding. When we finally got through hours of traffic, I told my wife never ever was I doing that again.

We were there last week for a vacation because the kids had never seen NYC before. We took Uber a lot. I was amazed at how those drivers constantly easily handled traffic/pedestrian situations that would stress me out. I know it gets routine for them, but it still seems like a super power to me.

And it still took an hour to get anywhere unless we were taking the subway.

Idk man the 5 and the 405 are fucking nightmares

Was gonna say LA or ATL. Massive freeways with maniacs. NYC is mostly bumper to bumper which is super annoying but preferable to driving 50-70 almost bumper to bumper with maniacs thinking they're Vin Diesel

I got stuck on the DC Beltway for five hours one time behind a big accident. I never resorted to the bottle, but I was eyeing it when we finally started moving.

This was also the event that finally caused me to cave and get a cell phone (back when cells first became a regular thing) because I was supposed to meet my wife somewhere and she was worried and had no idea where I was.

I would agree, I was just watching the Top Gear episode where they searched for the source of the Nile. The part where they got stuck in traffic in Uganda was mind boggling.

LA was made for cars. NYC was not. Car-centric cities suck.

With that said all cities have the worst traffic. I'd much rather have a walkable city than one designed for travel by car
