I earn over $100k a year but live in a expensive part of the world. Salary's great if you live in the middle of nowhere but in a spenny place, doesn't get you far.

Average houses here are like $840k

This is where I get roasted by CE.

I own a house here. How? I moved cross-country years ago.

So many people bitch about not being able to afford a house, so I ask "hey why don't you move a few hours away" and they always say "oh noooooo can't do that I need to live near my parents/sister/person I'm stalking" etc.

Everybody is different of course, sometimes you want to stay near places for various reasons. But, if you're not willing to move away for a bit and play the property game, then whining that you can't afford a property when you're doing literally fuck all to solve the problem... well, you can't solve that with fluffy words.

And yes I know that 100% confirms me as an asshole but I spent years away from my family and best friends. I missed my dad's 60th birthday because I couldn't afford the fuel. I turned 30 in my house, alone, during the pandemic. Having gone through that to get to where I am now, I'm happy. And I'm proud of it.

That works too but given how spenny rent is these days, I couldn't save anything if I rented if I hadn't have moved out. Houses here rent for $2000 pmo. I can't do that and put anything critical into savings.

Yes I could have moved somewhere cheap but I like to not get shot when I come home

1. That is highly dependent on geography
2. Contributing to retirement shouldnt be a luxury
3. Once you get used to skimping, you guys dont know what youre missingsome luxury things should be essential

That last point is stupid. You do what you gotta do within your budget. My base salary is something like 35k a year. I make closer to 55k cause overtime. I rent sure but I rent a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house on a half acre lot and take care of another person. I get by. I buy video games and I drink and smoke. I think I'm living pretty ok. I also eat out most nights cause that's what we do at work. At home I eat cheap usually

Having a sizeable home, taking care of someone else and having enough money for vices and video games sounds pretty good to me depending on just how much overtime they do. You realise how many people can't even conceive of such a life in America, right?

Yes it is. You can live well on that by yourself in NYC, you can contribute 10% to your 401K and your take home pay would be a little more than $50K. That's over $4K a month to pay rent, food, entertainment, etc.

Im going to call bullshit here, because I make almost $90K, contribute 10% to my 401K, 3% to a company matched stock plan, pay for insurances, and my take home is about 48K.

I don't. Just saying there isn't much wrong with Walmart clothes. I could afford better but that's typically where I get my clothes cause I'd rather spend my money on other shit. Anything more expensive clothing wise is stuff I buy for work. I fork out like 130-200 a year for boots. I recently spent like 60 bucks for 2 pairs of pants. Now my undershirts for work I still buy at Walmart. Knock off under armor shirts. I dontnlike that under armor has their logo (or did) right at the neck line. I don't like being a walking ad for a clothing brand
