No he called the police and the men were later arrested. Apparently they fired him cause touching their car by removing the tinfoil was considered interfering with shoplifters.

That allowed Burrola to yank a sheet of foil covering the license plate.

Yeah, sorry bro, you were doing the right thing but it could have triggered something and ended up with actions beyond shoplifting.

If it was in California then the guy isn't allowed to engage them and maybe kill them for it.

This was in Colorado.

It's their zero tolerance policy for attempting to stop / follow shoplifters in any way. I'm not totally against their reasoning though.... If you chase after a shoplifter and get shot and killed while on the clock that's partially on the company and they will have huge issues. If you chase a shoplifter and accidently hurt them that could open up the company to lawsuits.

Do I think it's dumb? Yes. Do I love a good photo of shoplifters? Fuck yes. Once it was even someone I knew years before. But I also think that the company doesn't want to get sued to hell if something goes wrong and in this country who would blame them?

Should he have been fired? No.

But employees also need to stop confronting shoplifters. Especially following them out to their car. You never know if they might be armed and it's not worth being killed over a corporation.

In May, two Georgia Lululemon employees were fired after they called the police on three masked men who returned to the Atlanta store after already stealing from the location several times before.

So literally do nothing....

I caught a shoplifter when I worked at Media Play once. It was some kid and he was acting shady. I went up to him and asked him what he was doing and he said "looking for Nancy Drew games" for the PC, which was weird because he was directly in front of them. Told my boss, took another lap around and found him opening CDs and games with a cutter. My boss turned the corner on the other side.

All I got out of it was the ability to wear jeans for a week to work and it bought me a little more time before getting let go. All the stores were closing and he decided to keep me for extra time while letting someone else go.

Cause some people take pride in their work. This is the way things used to be, but corporations stopped giving a fuck about their employees and just treat them as numbers.

ITT: People don't understand how company liability works.

You can make an argument either way, but the biggest issue is that these corporations aren't doing shit in stopping this kind of behavior. And it's because they don't care, because ultimately they just pass the cost onto the consumer. It's scary just how common these occurrences are, and if nothing is done about it, we're only moving towards a state of total anarchy.

That is the most likely scenario where I can see employees being more confrontational with shop lifters.

If a company tells you not to go after shop lifters but than deducts 4500$ from your pay to cover the stolen Diamond Ring,
I can see some employees being more aggressive with shop lifters.

Of all zero tolerance policies, thats one of the few I agree with, even if it gets well-meaning people fired. Just let them be scumbags and let the business deal with it. There is zero point in risking anything for a couple hundred in merchandise you have no reason to protect.

Nope. I don't think a company could do that. They can hold it against cashiers if their register comes up short at the end of the day though. "You made $3,000 in sales, but there's only $2,995 in the register. That missing $5 is going to come out of your paycheck"

Corporations; kill the planet, utilize slave labor and sweat shops, bust unions, commit wage theft far eclipsing all other forms of theft combined, dodge taxes, and use all of their ill-gotten profits to lobby for being able to keep doing the same shit even harder.
