I mean, hindsight of course, since this was in the middle of the Wii U era. Still, a little funny to think about the idea that Nintendo needed saving by being acquired when they are riding high right now.

Disney buying Nintendo would be awful. Good thing Japanese laws prevent that from ever happening.

Disney doesn't own KH and its original characters, Squenix does.

Who does the laughing, because both Nintendo and Disney are successful in their respective fields and pretty much have nothing to do with each other

Dude, having been a Nintendo fan during that era, it is hard to describe the level of toxic hate and doom that Nintendo revieved.

There was a huge backlash after the "blue ocean" and motion control Wii era where the XTREME late millenial generation that were a very-very different audience from Gen Z hated anything cutesy or "cozy" as they say now... remember this was the heart of the misogynist, Neo-Nazi fronted Gamergate movement.

Then the Wii U has a terrible launch, and nothing Nintendo could do was right in the eyes of the "hardcore" gamer audience, still mostly younger and male at this point. We can prove this by seeing the hugely improved reception to Wii U games on Switch.

Even the 3DS which was a decent but not runaway success like the DS was routinely seen as a potential failure for it's rocky start and price drop. It was probably saved by Pokemon.

Yeah... I very strongly remember that Nintendo and really for all gaming a "Dark Age" or really a "Dork Age" because it was dominated by such console fanboy nonsense and XTREME!!!! late millennial macho gamergate horseshit.

Yeah, it was rough. I loved my Wii U, and in terms of financial success, I had to cling onto anything like Mario Kart 8's "huge" boost to sales or Splatoon being a large success for a new IP. It was just constant doom and gloom along with "It's time for Nintendo to 3rd party." The 3DS at least selling reasonably (I recall Super Mario 3D Land as being the game people point to for saving it) made things feel fine, but it was tough being a Nintendo fan back then.

It's crazy how far removed those years are, but man, before the Switch came out, there was still so much doom talk that it would fail as well

Also, E3 2015, I feel like all hope was lost for many after that. Really toxic month, and then Iwata died, so it was a bummer.

Wasn't there a huge argument on the KH boards back in the day where people proved Disney owns KH and all the original characters? Square doesn't own any of it.

Wow, I can very relate to this. There was a period in my life, middle to early high school, where I had started considering Nintendo games and cartoons kiddy and girly and only played FPS, gritty sandbox, and zombie games on PC and Xbox. I avoided Nintendo games and even looked down on people that played it. After I went to a new boarding school for my later high school years and Uni I really started appreciating my 3DS more and reignited my interest in Nintendo games and "girl stuff" again. My mind opened a lot more after that.

If they're protected Category 3 or 2 FEFTA then you need prior permission from the Japanese ministry of finance. It's not a hard "no" but they would probably have some extremely stringent requirements to get them to agree.

This law was passed in response to Chinese interests buying up a bunch of Japanese security.
