Problem is servers have to be maintained indefinitely for games to be available forever and that just isnt happening. Especially now.

To those that don't read beyond the OP...the article straight up mentions "on the current marketplace". So that means legally obtainable. On the pirated games side of the internet, that number is more likely to be 3%.

For accessing nearly 9 in 10 classic games, there are few options: seek out and maintain vintage collectible games and hardware, travel across the country to visit a library, or piracy.
Looks like the pirates are doing this quite well already.

Just 13% of video game history is being represented in the current marketplace.

So this is just looking at what's currently available for purchase. They are definitely preserved somewhere

They are using 'not commercially available' as their criterion.

There are likely tens of thousands of long forgotten single creator cassette tape games for things like the Spectrum and Commodore 64 that are no longer available. They would be in that number. Collectors will still have them.

The ExoDOS tries to collect and emulate every released DOS game.
They got over 7200 games... and they know that they are still lacking games.
