i know the tipping system in general is bad in this country for a multitude of reasons. However, I just learned that the federal tipping minimal wage hasnt increased since it was introduced in 1991? What the actual fuck?

Not only are companies not paying their workers enough to live without relying on the generosity of their customers but the companies wont even adjust their minimal wage with inflation? That is just.. Its just asinine as fuck

We can't raise wages because that will cause inflation and $15 Big Macs! That's why prices have stayed the same as they were in 1991!

Its crazy because the minimum wage should be, at bare minimum, $4.76 if they kept up with inflation. That is beyond bullshit. Holy crap

The federal minimum wage is $7.25, which is the only reason why places like TX offer that much, because they'd prefer to give us $2 to nothing guaranteed an hour were they able to.

Looks like that's around $15 an hour, still significantly higher than what we pay in most states.

Well, no. The poor can't get poorer like God intended them to if you do that.

I'm working at a job that does $20 an hour and it's not enough.

We need rent control, we need free healthcare, we need public support programs that actually get properly funded and given to people who need it.

If you're ever having trouble understanding how/why a thing is the way it is in the US, just remember this simple rule: the US is the worst. That'll likely always get you to where you need to go.

Just remember it's very much intentional and malicious. You're meant to be treated like cattle if you aren't rich.

Can companies really not afford to pay their employees more? Even at a franchised fast food level?

I hear this, but most people who depend on tips seem to prefer it this way rather than having a set wage. Hear many saying theyd have to get paid at least 30 in order to compensate what they make in tips.

When I worked in Fast Food they'd let the restaurant run on a single employee rather than providing more hours

It's a common argument that capitalism promotes innovation and that's true but "innovative" is not a synonym for "good". One of the "innovations" that capitalism incentivizes is for capital holders to find ways to pay as little as possible for labor. And they're pretty damn successful at that when unions are weak and worker protections are piss poor.

That's only because in states like TX if they did away with tips in favor of a set wage that set wage would be $7.25.

In other, actually civilized countries, servers aren't paid the bare minimum, or if they are then it's considered a living wage, which obviously $7.25 would not be.

I would gladly take 15/hr as a steady paycheck over having some nights where I make 80-120 and other days where I make $20-40
