Imagine Chat GPT humaning it up as a video game npc or boss.

This is the future.

It will have all the knowledge of the world and might even know details about you. After you die it talks smack and says your house at address x is trash and you are alone and ugly and says it by name.
Might even pop up old embarrassing photos.

I talked about this awhile ago and it has some real potential in the future. Maybe 2 gens from now, every NPC in a game would have some kind of AI generated dialogue, spoken by an AI voice. That way you can have a unique experience every time you talk to someone. Or you can overhear entire convos that NPCs are just having about their life.

Combine that with some more AI action pathing, you can watch characters wake up, go to work, hang out at bars, go home. Then on weekends, watch them hang out with the family or go out to eat. Just live a life a normal person would IRL.

RDR 2 does this in a scripted fashion and it is still amazing to watch. Just imagine how it would be more freestyle.

Actually a demo of this already exists. Saw a streamer playing it. The game takes what you say and feeds it in. Then ChatGPT or whatever makes a response and the npc gives it.

Don't know name though.

I think it was NVIDIA that did a showcase of AI generated dialogue and it was embarrassingly bad.

"Real" AI?
It's basically just a marketing term now.
There's a reason why chess-playing programs don't use large language models.

Don't want them to talk but I'd be totally fine for AI generated from online play to be used as a way to make bots in multiplayer games more viable.

Old video games didn't have real A.I. for cpu opponents.
They didn't think or interact basically at all.

Galactic Civilizations IV is supposed to use AI to generate a background story of your civilization each time you make a faction, with additional stories for individual governors/notable citizens. Probably for opposing factions as well. Mostly it's limited by the AI having to be server side rather than client side.

Not quite the same thing as getting trash talked live by an AI opponent but give 10-20 years.

That isn't thinking. It is just a fancy if then.

I will illustrate:

Chess CPU is given a board state and asked to win. This is not intelligence, just a formula.

Chess A.I. is playing vs. Grandmaster. It knows it is playing a game. It knows who it is playing against. It searches database and replays past games of the grandmaster.

An AI as intelligent as half the bots running around this year would absolutely dominate every one of us at any game, no matter what, if given enough time to "learn" about every game.

Video games have far from perfect balance, meaning that any loopholes or meta builds would be instantly discovered. You'd need to have an air-tight balance spreadsheet for say, a roguelike or deckbuilder, to even begin to even things out.

You'd have to put so many nuanced checks and balances in place to tailor fit each ones "mental" capacity for easy/normal/hard etc, that you might as well just stick to the conventional method of making AI in games anyway.

And even then, AI is going to have better reaction times than a human and never make mistakes that wed attribute to something like cramps or muscle memory. And can you imagine the kind of APM theyd be putting out in an RTS?

Actually we dont have to imagine. Just watch any tool assisted speed run. That is what wed be up against.

Remember that Dreamcast game, Seaman?
I'd imagine NPCs will eventually be able to have conversations with the player using your headset. No more "pick from these options to advance your quest"
It'll be more like a live DnD game session.
"how the fuck do I get to Sizemore Castle?"
"turn around and walk past the big rock that days 'Sizemore castle' you idiot."

I would think there would be a companion that makes you better at the game + prepares you for online competition

"If you want to actually win, you should consider blocking."

"You never do any air combos, do you want some tips on how to pull them off?"

"How about you beat me as quickly as you can and we can determine your tendencies!"

Then games like Pokemon develop teams rivals and bosses you'll have a natural weakness to no matter what team you utilize

CPU just a program written with if then logic. It is rigid and unchanging.

A.I. can actually learn and adapt

Maybe your issue is you got fooled into thinking old CPU actually adapted? They didn't.
