Where if you come to a complete stop while in 'Dirve' the engine will stop until you remove your foot off of the brake?

On paper it sounds nice but I find it more annoying than anything.

If the engine stops wouldnt that mean it shut off?
also, if it does shut off wouldnt you have to wait for it to warm up or something?

My girlfriend's car has it and I fucking hate it.

It doesn't even end up saving you that much gas, and it's just harder on the engine long term. Same with cylinder deactivation.

It's seamless with current technology. Cuts pollution, saves fuel.

The system is designed to re-start before lubricants cool down too much. Modern cars are robust enough to handle it unless they are real pieces of cheap shit.

That's not a feature I was familiar with. Is it just an extra low idle (like a sleep mode for computers) or actually shut off completely?

Ive seen and heard cars that do this and it sounds like unnecessary wear and tear on something thats already sustaining copious amounts of wear and tear.
Apparently modern starters are designed to withstand tens to hundreds of thousands of start cycles, so it's less wear and tear than you may think but I also agree, just feels like a mostly pointless action for the car to engage in

Hate hate hate auto engine start/stop. It's one of the reasons why I'll try to hold onto my current car for as long as possible.

Some cars do allow you to disable it so that might be the path I take.

You can turn it off on a lot of cars now.

My mother's car has it, and it's really jarring and annoys the shit out out of her. Hers was the first car I saw it in.

My car doesn't but I'll probably just accept it and deal with it next time I get a car if I don't just get an EV.

My Mazda CX-50 has the least jarring idle stop feature I've experienced (shutting down and restarting is quite smooth as it barely uses the starter motor to crank the engine, and the lag time before I can accelerate again is also quite minimal), so I don't mind it at all. I can also prevent the idle stop from kicking in by only lightly pressing the brake pedal, so it's not like it kicks in every time I come to a stop such as in heavy traffic. Doesn't seem to save that much fuel overall though according to the logs, but it's still better than the alternative of unnecessarily wasting gas when waiting at a stop light.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

My car won't enable the idle stop until the cabin temperature reaches a certain point, and even then it will still run the AC fans lightly while the engine is off.

I hate it. If I have the radio on the sound quality goes to shit for some reason when the engine shuts off.

Obviously the AC isn't as nice either.

Also, if I'm first in line at a stop light, I always think people behind me are gonna beep when the light turns green since it takes a second or 2 for the engine to start and me to get going.

They can kick rocks. Ive seen way to many people blow intersections way after their light turned red. Use that extra second or two to make sure no asshole is going to kill you.

Maybe your car is different from mine, (91 Nissan 240sx) but pressing the clutch and reving the engine certainly does not turn off the engine.

Im legitimately curious about this.

The starters developed for auto stop vehicles have been specially built to withdraw the cycles.

And no, not doing routine maintenance on your engine is what causes the most damage, not doing what the engine was built to do.

Would be more efficient to have an electric drivetrain and keep the engine at more or less constant RPM. Automatic stop is a gimmick and exists solely to prop up an aesthetic.

I drive stick and it's perfect because the engine starts when I push in the clutch.

I'm not a fan of it in automatic vehicles because there's a weird jolt forward when the engine starts again

I have no AC and drive with my windows down. I hear it all the time at stop lights. It's just a gentle crank and fire instead of what you hear when you first crank it for the day.

My car has it and I like it. It's never been an inconvenience.

And at least for my car, it's very controllable. It only cuts off the engine if I press down the brake pedal 100% of the way. Whereas the car comes to a complete stop at about 75% pressure. So if I'm not expecting to stop for long, I simply won't press the brake pedal down with full force.

Or, if I don't want to worry about it at all, there's a button to completely disable the idle stop until I press it again.
