For millennia people lived under the yoke of someone else, who had gotten that position through birth or theft.

Still do, both literally and figuratively. Is there really much of a difference between royalty and the old money billionaires that control things behind the scenes now? There's plenty of "peasants" that worship and defend them too.

You think it was worse then? They had even less control, they didn't have the reach that your rulers do now.

They had nobles to enforce their laws and will, but if you felt your lot was bad -- you'd easily be able to disappear into the night, and live off the land somewhere else.

People were always trying to overthrow monarchs.

But even on the rare occasions they succeeded, they never really had a clear idea of what to do instead. Mostly they just replaced them with another monarch.

You should have spoke of Emperors. Like the Imperial one in China.
One of their little "tricks", was to bring a Donkey into their court and say it was a Horse, and any of their Mandarins who said it was a Donkey, would be executed by the Emperor.
Emperor's also, if they took a fancy to any of their official's daughters, would just claim them for their imperial harem. Their father's, mother's and even themselves had little to no choice in the matter, and if they did try and escape -- their whole family would be executed.
