Microsoft does it all the time! They had the COD exclusivity deal before Sony! They can easily outspend Sony as seen by their most recent purchases. People are in this very topic arguing that it's good Microsoft partakes in the same exact business practices because fuck Sony and I don't see you going "Well, no it's still wrong to cheer on even if Sony has made a couple more purchases than them in the last 25 years." And I do care about Microsoft stuff. I haven't said I'm protesting their decisions. I'm dying for Starfield. I love Forza Horizon 5. You seem to forget that my problem was people excusing Microsoft, not people criticizing Sony.

The only defense I'm seeing for exclusivity deals and purchases is "well Sony does it worse". How is that not defending one side doing it?

I say Sony's acquisitions brought less attention because they were essentially already first-party studios and that's "defense". But "Microsoft eats a few less babies than Sony or Nintendo, so they're comparatively good" is "context". I haven't defended a single Sony decision in this topic unless you consider liking Uncharted to be one.

Microsoft's CoD "exclusivity" deal back in the 360 days only gave them access to map packs about a month before PS3 got them

Meanwhile Sony's exclusivity deal locked ENTIRE GAME MODES to PlayStation platforms for a WHOLE YEAR. The competition didn't even get to play the full game until the next year's CoD was already out!

It is fair in context, but it's also wrong. That these companies can have multi-billion dollar wars shows how fucked up our society is. I'm not actually saying any words that defend Sony. It's not clear. The UK litigation has a date of August so I don't know what's going on there.

The last update I have is that they resubmitted the application with some "material changes" presumably to placate the cloud gaming issues CMA had.

Found it. Bloomberg said Microsoft agreed to sell the rights to cloud based gaming in the UK.

It's kind of hilarious considering whoever buys these rights are almost certainly going to run it on azure anyway. Google probably isn't going to want to touch it and Amazon would be competing against itself.

We're going to reach 500 posts without anyone actually explaining how exclusivity deals are pro-consumer. "It's legal and everyone does it, some worse than others" just tells us why it happens, but every industry is legally and competitively fucking over the consumer every day. It doesn't make it any more consumer-friendly. I have not once judged anyone for buying Microsoft games or suggested that Microsoft is uniquely bad for participating.

How is it not? The games aren't going to come to Sony and Nintendo forever. A bunch of third-party studios are now first-party and their IPs will go the same way. I'm not saying it's worse than anyone else doing it, just that it is literally happening.

Do we really need any exclusives to any platform? Plenty of electronic devices and other hardware sell just fine without exclusive content. Streaming is bad enough as is. Imagine if Samsung bought Netflix or Hulu or whatever and locked it to their TVs as a way to entice consumers.

Because they agreed under oath to bring games to more platforms with parity meaning no more timed dlc exclusives. It's the opposite of an exclusivity deal.

What's going to happen after 10 years is too far ahead to properly guess. Maybe cloud gaming will be more popular. Maybe CoD will lose popularity. You can bet Sony is going to start preparing now in order to have a potential replacement for CoD if it does get pulled. And maybe it'll become more popular than CoD.

Fortnite ended up being more popular than COD. From Epic that Sony invests a lot of money in.

10 years is a long time. Microsoft hasn't even owned Minecraft for 10 years. Who knows how things will look in 10 years and there's no guarantee Microsoft will take COD exclusive after then anyway. It's a huge revenue driver as a multiplatform game like Minecraft.

I also wonder if, since Sony didn't sign the contract, MS could get away with some sneaky stuff like releasing CoD a month later on PlayStation compared to Xbox?

Oh definitely on the table. I doubt they are going to do it yet tho.

I doubt Microsoft is going to do anything controversial with COD for at least a decade. It's not worth being used as an example for future acquisitions for the company.

It being on Game Pass is enough of an advantage. Otherwise they get the high revenue.
