The saddest part is Clarence Thomas got into Yale due to affirmative action, and he resented it because he felt like everyone there thought he was dumb and didn't deserve to be there.

Doesnt even matter at this point.

Super Racist company CEOs will pick a hard working minority over a lazy white person, regardless of their racism. In the end they only care about themselves.

I've seen some cheering among Asian Americans about this decision, given that they apparently had the most rejected applications from Ivy Leagues or some such.
That does make it a bit nuanced, though I doubt the SC took that into account.

They think they are being denied b/c of so called 'underperforming' Blacks/Hispanics. But what some of them don't understand, admissions to Colleges/University's is more than just 'Grades/SAT/GPA' they also consider 'intangibles' such as Social work, Community Service, etc.

Nobody wants a bunch of anti-social workaholic bots walking around in their books all day, if that's the only criteria of getting in.

As for ending it, well, I dunno many people often misread Affirmative Action as a 'White/Black' issue, but it's really any group (other races, disabled, LGBTQ, etc) who should not be discriminated against and be considered for a spot as along as they are qualified for it.

I never was a fan of it (as a 'Black' person) because I don't think people should be forced to work/study/etc together if they aren't welcome. But at the same time, I think people (regardless of your background) should step out their comfort zones sometimes and learn and meet different things/people.

Affirmative action is racist, so them ending it is one of the few good things they've done (outweighed by all the bad things, of course).

Well, based on observations of his decades on the bench, I can conclusively say that he is dumb and didn't deserve to be at Yale.
So...not the best counter-argument.... Imagine defending AA w/ "but without AA, the next Clarence Thomas won't get an undeserved admission to Yale!". Like... "oh no?"

(also he probably "taped" Anita Hill and is hyper-corrupt)

Would it be 'classist' against the wealthy if affirmative action was switched to favor the economically disadvantaged?

Now ask yourself the same question with race. Cheers.

all that is pretty much bs though, let's be honest University is a place to study and do research, why should it matter what is the colour of your skin or extracurriculars?

most university admission in Canada is based solely on grades and I was always grateful for that.

There are tons of grants based upon Indigenous status, and I think that's still pretty important at this point in our history. I'm not altogether sure if it's enshrined in any law though, but I think it'd be kinda fucked if a school's right to do that were removed.

I'd also be pretty interested if anyone can elaborate on Affirmative Action...did that enshrined all types of admissions-based preferences aside from race as well? Economic status? Gender status? I know lots of grants are based on those things. It feels like only race has been discussed when it comes to Affirmative Action being struck down - did Affirmative Action encompass more than just race?

Although I'm finding explanations right now actually.

Reality:
Affirmative action does not require preferences, nor do women and minorities assume that they will be given preference. Race, gender, and national origin are factors that can be considered when hiring or accepting qualified applicants. Hiring qualified women and minorities is similar to the preferences given to veterans in hiring and to children of alumni in college admissions. There are also other preferences used in selecting qualified candidates. For example, when private colleges and universities value geographic diversity on their campuses, an out-of-state student may be admitted before an in-state student. Some colleges and universities consider athletic abilities and/or evidence of leadership skills in addition to academic qualifications.

https://www.upstate.edu/diversityinclusion/policies-and-procedures/aa/myth_reality.php

This all seems super weird. Does that mean that because Affirmative Action has been struck down, colleges and universities technically shouldn't be able to admit based upon athletic qualifications?

Depends on the field. If they're going to be designing a nuclear reactor or performing brain surgery, that's exactly the kind of person I'd want doing it.

I totally get why the lawsuit was raised. I remember seeing the demographic numbers that were brought up in the case, and the asian families were absolutely getting screwed. With the highest scores of all the applicants they still only had like a 12% chance of entry. Doesn't help that Harvard activity tried to conceal it. People seem to forget that the asian community didn't exactly have it all too good in the past here either, but for some reason they don't get the same soft handed treatment.

Considering affirmative action is overtly racist both in its stated impact (specifically to benefit on the basis of race) and its actual impact (first, by specifically punishing Asian-American students, and second by preferring applicants on the basis of race over merit), they're being anti-racist for getting rid of it

Remember that CALIFORNIA, one of the most liberal states in the country, both overturned affirmative action in its colleges AND voted to to keep it that way... and, more importantly, the enrollment from minority groups went UP, not down, as a long-term effect.

The only thing that should be the law is an admissions process that ignores race, gender, etc, and looks solely at merit (including by stripping out things like names that signal race)
