Like Persona 4 levels

Cold Steel really deviated into The Slice of Life harem style, which is its major criticism. The preceding games have a smaller scope of principal characters. I don't know how Kuro no Kiseki will handle its gameplay elements, but I'll play it anyways.

Cold steel 1 and 3 are like that.

the others are more like regular RPGs. Travel around the world doing things and story happens and whatnot.

very brief summary of the games:

trails in the sky trilogy - follows two junior adventurers who join an adventurer guild and the story focuses on their journey around the country helping out with various goings on, as they rise the ranks and become professional adventurers

trails from zero / trails to azure - follow a small police squad as they solve crimes in a major city whose ownership is contested between two major world powers

trails of cold steel - follow some military academy students as they do military academy things

due to the way that cold steel is, 2 out of 4 games have a school setting and you switch between free days at school that are persona-like and field days which you go out into the world and do shit. But all the other games dont follow the free day/field day setup

the games are very long, and there is a lot of focus both on low scale casual stuff/downtime, and high stakes dangerous situations

The slice of life moments only happen during downtime, and it's mostly just learning about the characters. It's also completely skippable if you really end up hating it that much. They aren't important to the plot or anything.

Trails in the Sky trilogy is the most soulful JRPG experience I have ever played

the games after are really good too, but it's best experienced starting from the very beginning
