What if someone creates an extension that allows the ad to play for the full duration but mutes the audio and opens up a tab with pictures of animals?

I feel like they're eventually going to make people do little quizzes about the ads. Answer 3 questions about the ad and if you get at least 2 wrong, you have to re-watch it. The infrastructure for this is already there. On YouTube TV they have surveys during the commercial breaks sometimes, and it's optional to interact with at this point but they could easily turn that survey into a quiz that you have to answer correctly to keep watching.

I don't know how people aren't seeing the questions about being forced to engage with advertising, like in 20 years they're going to be tracking your eyeballs and charging you a fee if you don't look at all the billboards when you walk down the street - the natural conclusion of "Adblock is theft."

It's not going anywhere. People are so cucked by these companies. They have the general population by the FOMO balls. Price hikes, DLC, microtransactions, loot boxes, account sharing blocking, ad-blocking, third-party app restricting, people will grunt about all of this and then these companies rake in millions to billions more.

I pay for YT premium since it used to be bundled with Google play music, and I consider it worth it, but I don't blame anyone for not buying it and using an ad blocker instead. People calling them leeches have huffed too much boot polish.

If someone contributes absolutely nothing to the sustainability of a platform, yet uses its resources, how is that not a parasitic relationship?

Surely I'm not the only person that gets stupid long ads on videos whenever I'm not using a ad-blocker right? I swear to god, multiple times I've put something on to listen to while I go to sleep or I'm in the shower and then some fucking 30+ minute long "ad" (because sometimes they're ads, and sometimes they're some fucking politician I've never heard of going on a 30 minute rant) will come on and play loud as fuck.

I tried to listen to a song once and the first ad I got was 15 minutes long. Fuck that shit.

And then if you're watching a youtuber, they will have their own in video sponsorships on top of the ads. So you'll get unskippable ad, introduction, spsonor, unskippable ad.

Even if someone is using ad block, that someone is Google's product, generating revenue without ever knowing it for Google.

I've been paying for Premium for years and have zero regrets over it. I use YouTube more than any other streaming platform so it was an easy choice.

Blocking ads is obviously great, but the real benefit is being able to minimize YT on mobile so I can keep surfing/whatever
