THIS. People keep going on and on about graphics but it's not all about graphics. Power brings more than just graphics, it increases the limitations of what you can actually put into the game content and mechanics-wise.

A great example is Monster Hunter World vs Monster Hunter Rise. There is a massive difference between the two because of power alone. A tremendous amount of features even down to less noticeable things like monster AI were minimized or outright removed in Rise because all of those things equal up to a ton of stress on the system.

Lack of power can also straight up prevent a console from running games. For example, Yoshida, the producer of the MMO Final Fantasy XIV, wanted to bring the game to switch but couldn't because it was too weak. FFXIV's graphics aren't good at all but the Switch can't run it because the game has too much in it.

As games get BIGGER, the systems need to get stronger. Sure, you can put your entire budget into graphics and get a 20hr campaign, but many developers sacrifice graphics for raw content. Optimization can only go so far. A game like Elden Ring could NEVER run on a Switch.

I still want to see what would happen if a dev intentionally made a game that looks like cleaned up 360 graphics and used the rest of the processing power on world design or whatever.

Nintendo have managed to make the games they want just fine on Nintendo hardware. I don't see whats the fuss about

Switch uses a failed Nvidia Tegra chip from 2014/2015 that was rejected for cell phones and low powered laptops due to using too much power for phones and being too slow for laptops. It was already outdated in 2017 when Switch came out, but because Nvidia had LITERALLY ZERO customers for it it was probably the absolute cheapest SoC agreement in history.

Nintendo the only console maker to fuck Nvidia on price instead of the opposite like theyve done to both Sony and Microsoft.

For what it's worth the chipset the next platform is guaranteed to use has been out for some time and a few people have done benchmarks on it. On PC games that aren't optimized for the SoC, they perform at the level of a baseline PS4 but are capable of competent RTX and DLSS (upscaling), and games that are more optimized run slightly under the level of a PS4 Pro.

The same losers making fun of Nintendo still act like theyre nine years old jealous of not having Zelda on their system. Hilarious.

Steam deck is using the same cpu and gpu architecture in the PS5/Series X.

Again, Nintendo did not make a SoC for the Switch, they used an old and already bad for its time solution because it cost a few dollars.

The steam deck is orders of magnitude better and is a fully custom design too.

Nintendo learned to give up while they're behind. They quit the race for power and started focusing on other shit. And evidently with the Switch, it's worked out great for them. Here's to hoping they don't get too caught up in themselves like with the Wii U and continue to create in unimaginable ways.

You dont know what youre talking about. Nintendo doesnt want to lose $200 per box sold and never have had to do so.

They have a good relationship with the company that would likely supply a high powered solution and itd be no issue to get one made. Hell, AMD has a design all ready to be dropped into any device which is what you see in the hastily put together ASUS ROG Ally handheld.

And be generous with the RAM. 1080p max native res so more juice can be saved.

PS5 and Series use a good chunk of power on 4k or going to 1480p or 1920p.

Earth Defense Force games sacrifice graphics for pure content. Not world design since there aren't many maps but goddamn do those games push the boundaries of system power to their absolute limits with the sheer scale of content, enemies, and destruction.

Doesn't matter what motherboard or graphics CPU it uses. Non-Nintendo games will run or look like shit as always.

Selling at a loss and not having a historic high attach rate, LMAO! Mario Kart on the Switch alone sold over 60 million copies, 50% attach rate. One of every two Switch owners. Theyre really missing out man.

The best selling non-multi platform games are all on Wii and Switch too but I guess they should have followed Sony. Crying to the world governments over a game they dont make and the future of cloud gaming Sounds like a win to me. /s

I played Soul Calibur II on both PS2 and GC and the GC port ripped the PS2 port apart. Here try this, when Namco released Soul Calibur II HD on PS3/360 everyone was furious that they had used the inferior PS2 version instead of the Xbox or GC versions. Oh and for those that don't know Link was in SC II although I never used him

Other games I liked were Star Wars Rogue Leader II, Sonic, Pac-Man World, True Crime, Tomb Raider Legend and Resident Evil 4.

The Cube had some amazing games if you just knew where to look.

I'll be honest, everything before Xbox/GameCube was "Bad graphics" in my mind.

Everything after ranges from "Decent/good" but I get so much less out of any graphical jump post GameCube.

I honestly don't care if graphics improve from PS4 era ever again. I was playing the new hitman on a 3080, and all I really thought during the intro was, "This game looks nice." I don't need to be able to see the stretch marks on the main character of TLOU3 when the sun hits them. It just doesn't matter to me.

I think it should be important to recognize how successful the Switch is and has been even though it lacks any of the power and tech the current gen consoles have.

It means that they definitely are making quality games that large amounts of people actually really really enjoy without any of the power. It puts a spotlight on just how shitty or mediocre a crapton of current gen PS4/XOne/PS5/XSeriesX/PC games are. Many of them not utilizing the power to the fullest or being pitifully optimized among other things.

Brand-new 5th gen-exclusive games like Forspoken have no excuse for being so trash with empty open worlds, ass optimization, etc., even with all of the power at their disposal when Switch games like BotW and TotK exist.

Sony, Microsoft, and PC game developers need to do better.
