IMO Rare's 3D platformers tend to have pretty big issues. They feel really sluggish and a lot of the level design is full of padding. SM64, on the other hand feels pretty good and the levels are designed where you can shortcut all over the place.

Ill one-up you, I prefer DK64 to Banjo Kazooie (which I always thought wasnt a very good game since the first time I played it way back when it came out).

Did you ever get frustrated enough at BK to the point of ripping out the cartridge throwing it on the floor and yelling "I hate this game!"?

Honestly I've tried that game several times to give it a fair chance but the game is not fun. Rare are actually the worst, they're the most extreme case of 3d platformer collectathons of that era, just a whole bunch of junk collecting. I liked the donkey Kong country trilogy but never bothered collecting just beating the games. For their 3d era I just didn't play any of their games.

I've taken out my n64 and the banjo cartridge to try this game off and on for 17 years now. It's just unplayable

I've tried at least 3 times across 3 decades to attempt to like Banjo but I just can't. The game is just jank AF. It takes the worst aspects of SM64 and multiplies them by 3x.

Time has also not been kind to the game. We've evolved so much in terms of 3D platforming quality of life to the point where playing the original Banjo is like trying to use a pocket knife to cut down a tree.

If Banjo had the smaller levels/scope and better platforming that SM64 has it would be the superior game based strictly on all the abilities.

Banjo is good as it is, but the worlds are entirely too big, and there's way too many things to collect. It eventually just overstays it's welcome. Not saying Mario doesn't do that, but Mario does that around Rainbow Ride as opposed to the second or third world.

Yeah super mario 64 is still amazing. Besides mario still controlling near perfectly to this day, it was not a collectathon mess like everything, every imitator that came after. You collected 1 thing, coins. You had a clear objective, get the star. Sure the 100 coins thing can be exhausting on replays but hey whats nice about coins is they refill health so that's something.

At least with modern games that have quality of life improvements, even annoying open world games at least have location markers for all collectibles so you're not wandering around aimlessly because we simply don't have time to be wandering aimlessly and not enjoying the game on our limited free time. Not to mention items contributing to stuff like improved stats and/or unlockables of some sort.

The collect-a-thon aspect of Banjo Kazooie being overblown here

Basically it's notes = coins and jigsaws = stars

Things like eggs and feathers are just ammo for shooting and... fuel I guess for flying. But you'll just encounter them naturally, you don't have to look hard for them and you don't need to meticulously get them all or anything, just enough to keep your reserves stocked up

I guess the mumbo tokens are something that SM64 doesn't have, but there's not that many in the game and the reward for them (the ability to transform into animals) is super fun and worth it

Basically, collecting never felt like a huge chore or anything to me

Ever since I was a kid, couldnt get into BK at all. Always preferred DK64.

After on and off attempts for a few years, finally finished it last year and thought it was aight. Loved the hell out of Click Clock Wood though, wish more of its levels were like it

Whoever says this is blinded by nostalgia. The N64's library is filled with jank that has been ruined by time. The PS1's library is packed with quality titles that can still stand on their own merits today.

That's why people remember Crash bandicoot for how good it is, while they remember Mario 64 because "well think about what it did for gaming"
