I find it pretty funny that there are a lot of people -- professional and casual alike -- who get upset at the use of taunts in fighting games.
Them being mad over it means it's serving its purpose well.

I have played rounds of fighting games where all I did was taunt.

Well, that's what taunts do.

Some of the animations are pretty interesting, so I like them (and, I admit, it's sort of cool if people can actually find "free moments" to do taunts without opening themselves up).

And then we have SF4 Dudley and SF5 Akuma.
Took taunt to the next level (although pretty sure the consequences of the effects were inadvertent).

I was watching this fighting game YouTuber. He was doing an online SFV match and having a pretty good time. Then the other guy used a taunt and he became visibly upset and started playing more aggressively while muttering about the other guy being disrespectful lol

In a genre of games that's all about predicting your opponent's next move, and baiting them to do something reckless so you can punish it; taunting absolutely has its place.

I think they're a sort of lazy flex - you just press a button instead of doing anything particularly fancy or complex

but sometimes they have fun audio/animations

I like the 3rd strike taunts since they actually do something

In Marvel Snap Hello and the fist bump emoji are pretty standard greetings to start the match.

I never understood why people are "no taunting, "it's unprofessional!!!1!1" or whatever similar to that. I used to have a friend who was like no taunts, no auto kills, no beating me, and a bunch of other shit that was super toxic and made winning nowhere near as fun as it should be.

Like yeah it can be annoying or even frustrating in some select situations, but come on man.
