Like, ignoring that a murderer loved the book, objectively, I dont see anything wrong with it.

I read it as satire and had a good time. It is legit funny and pathetic, but has some real moments too.

Is it a conservative backlash because it uses a lot of foul language?

Because it isnt written traditionally?

Because the protagonist isnt likable?

I can understand it if it isnt your kind of book, but some people really think it is one of the worst written.

Combo of the protag being unbearable (even if this was intentional it doesn't make for an enjoyable read) and the actual overall plot just being pretty boring.

I think it's overhyped especially with regards to the controversy.

Personally I thought it was a book with 5 star writing but a 1 star plot that averaged out to a meh experience. It's one of those books where I understand the love and the hate but don't fall into either camp.

Why does it seem like no one ever views him as a confused kid going through a phase of hyper judgementalism? They always either try to identify with his "rebelliousness" or try to judge him as harshly as a grown adult.

Also add to it the "English Class" kind of reading, which is probably why most people who read it had to read it.

I feel like if I tried reading it again like 10 years out of high school, I might like it again, but it was also the least enjoyable book I had to read for English Class basically the entire time I was in school.

Oddly enough, it was never an assigned reading for me in high school or undergrad, and I was like 27 when I read it. I didn't really hate the book, but I also didn't see the hype. I could rationalize why it was such a big deal for the period of its publication but as an enduring part of the American literary canon? Nah.

Its an extremely well-written and convincing book about a typical wealthy teenager. But, like most typical wealthy teenagers, Holden Caulfield is a self-absorbed and narcissistic asshole and he doesnt make for an enjoyable protagonist for many.

Small list of his accomplishments from my memory of reading the book over twenty years ago:

- constantly mocked and belittled his classmates and supposed friends at nearly every waking moment,
- patted himself on the back for not being a rapist, and then went on to more or less think that women owed him something for being so nice with a typical incel-mindset,
- faked having cancer to get sympathy from an older woman, and
- proceeded to make up random stories about said woman's son for literally no reason at all

I'm sure that there are more, but I mostly forget. Those ones stood the test of time as being particularly obnoxious, though.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

Just to expand on my earlier point, until I read this book I basically thought people in the 1940s spoke like Humphrey Bogart or something, literally all media I had consumed from that era had people speaking in such an alien, old fashioned way, like it was a different world. Holden Caulfield bridges that gap and helps me understand what someone might have been thinking back then.

This book predates sooo many famous pieces of media (predates pop music essentially) yet his edgy cynical attitude has always made me feel like the book could have been written in the 21st century. He hates on Lawrence Olivier the way a modern teen might hate on Justin Bieber or something similar and popular

I can overlook him being an annoying opinionated teenager or the story being boring just because he was basically the first to do it. The writing just feels crazy realistic and ahead of it's time. A real time capsule
