Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin published a new audio recording Saturday claiming he was turning his forces around from a march toward Moscow.

We turning our columns around and going back in the other direction toward our field camps, in accordance with the plan, he said in a message on Telegram.

The announcement comes as the Belarusian government claimed President Alexander Lukashenko had reached a deal with Wagner boss to halt the march of his forces on Moscow.

"This morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin briefed his Belarusian counterpart on the situation in southern Russia with the private military company Wagner," the statement said. "The heads of state agreed on joint actions.
"As a follow-up to the agreements, the President of Belarus, having being additionally informed on the situation through his own channels, and in agreement with the President of Russia, held talks with the head of Wagner PMC Yevgeny Prigozhin," the statement continued. "Yevgeny Prigozhin accepted the proposal of the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko to stop the movement of armed persons of the Wagner company on the territory of Russia and take further steps to de-escalate tensions."

Disappointing, really.

They seemed so committed to this, I really want to know how they were convinced to just give up on it.

Yeah, was hoping it would precipitate the end to the invasion in Ukraine, with whomever the winner needing to call back the military to assert control over Russia.

I don't know what's going on anymore, and don't want to jump to conclusions.
Prigo planning this for months and going this far, it seems unbelievable he'd just give up.

Did Putin agree to let him take over if Putin can escape to Venezuela?
Was this all some ruse to bait Ukraine into attacking and exposing themselves to a prepared counter-attack? (I'd totally believe Putin sacrificing some of his own soldiers to sell the ruse)
Was this all some ruse to use as a surprise "loyalty test" to see who'd flee like rats, who'd backstab Putin, and who'd stand by him, so he could then clean house, Xi Xinping style?

The current narrative that Prigo went this far, then said, "never mind, we cool" is more ludicrous than any of the above.

Tbh, I didn't really know how to feel about this.

On one hand, the war ending, and Putin getting what he deserves would have been nice. It's paranoia for sure, but I also don't know how I feel about the world's largest nuke stockpile being in a land where a power vacuum was set in place.

I hope this minor distraction gives Ukraine some ability to strike harder for that brief time things aren't completely unified.

Im out of loop. Why did people think a group of this 50K or whatever could end the war soon. If Ukraine with millions of troops hasnt?

My thought process:

1) Wagner attempts coup
2) Wagner or Putin wins
3) The winner has to now take control of Russia (if Wagner won) or reassert control of Russia (if Putin won)
4) That would take manpower, not to mention cleaning/purging the Russian military / political groups / etc etc for dissidents
5) Which would mean the military and political efforts would be concentrated on Russia homeland, leaving little, if any, to spare against Ukraine
6) Ukraine invasion would end in effect, because Russia won't be able to continue... although Russia probably won't announce defeat/permanent withdraw/end to "special operations"/etc etc
