Or even Spybot for that matter. Those used to be good, until Spybot basically started to withhold giving you 6x fewer definitions unless you paid money (It always had a donate button, guess it was not enough.)

And MWB sold out to GWX in 2016 and went after your Windows Vista.

I think I have it on my MacBook, but it has never found anything in the 10+ years I've used it

I have not updated my MWB in a year. This time it wants me to restart my computer on an update.

I am a bit apprehensive in allowing that, as it never asked me to do it before.

I was a computer technician until late 2017. Spybot and malwarebytes were great.

Nope. It became malware itself after it got overhauled in the early/mid 2010s. Now it wants to replace your AV, install an agent, always run as admin, randomly disable/overtake other settings, push you to buy it at a subscription rate, and worst of all, the scanner isn't nearly as good as it used to be before it went full corporate.

It's a classic story of software enshittification

I remember it listed generic files on my old windows vista computer. They looked like names of system files. I quarantined them, and when I restarted, it began an endless boot cycle. I finally managed to get into safe mode and bring the files out of quarantine. I think they got in bed with Windows 10 and GWX (aka the GWX takeover that forced and tricked users into installing windows 10 using trickery and force.

MWB was good before that ended up happening.

I use it and Win Defender and haven't had any issues. I also visit a ton of shady sites.

I have Avast and a few Chrome extensions to block websites. Looking forward to trying out the new Comodo 2024, whenever that comes out.

Yeah, I still use it and Windows Defender on my PC.
Also have the MWB browser extension, which I think has some false positive "hits" for unsafe sites that are pretty clearly safe, but otherwise works fine.
Didn't realize it had gone to shit beyond the frequent attempts to get me to buy a paid version.

I will use it only if I want to run a one-time scan to make sure nothing weird is on a system. Due to how badly it tries to integrate with services and disabling the built-in Defender though, I uninstall it afterwards nowadays.

Got rid of it long after I should have, but it's gone. Only use Windows Defender now.

Spybot did the same thing. Or Windows Defender did. As soon as I updated it (Spybot), Defender threw a hissy fit.

I've been using Avast for years but it's a system hog and sticks itself into everything whether you want it to or not ( -_-)

I got rid of it because I think it was conflicting with Windows Defender and creating more security risks than solving them anymore. It seemed great in the past though.
